Thread regarding VMware layoffs

This is completely demoralizing

Submitting countless applications and dealing with rejection emails and final rounds with no offer is completely demoralizing. I don't know how the rest of you are doing, but I'm starting to panic.

"Guess the situation isn't so bad where I am"

What alternative universe do you live in? You failed to mention your country.

"You've all missed the best window of opportunity to leave VMW. While I do understand that waiting for the severance seemed to be the right choice, in hindsight, it's problematic now that the job market is tight. You'll have a better chance in 2024. Lesson learned."

I keep hearing these warnings, but is that situation specific to the US market? I've been searching for a week now and have landed three interviews, with one of them progressing so quickly that I'm starting to worry about what will happen if my severance package (if any) gets delayed. Guess the situation isn't so bad where I am 🤔

To the OG,
What’s your current role?
If you’re an Engineer, Developer, or Sales professional (AE or SE), I don’t think it would be that bad, unless you’re not willing to accept that you might need an adjustment in pay.

The situation in the job market depends on where you're from, but what I've found to work are as follows:

  1. Connect with headhunters on LinkedIn and personally inquire about open positions.
  1. Subscribe to major job search sites, including LinkedIn, Indeed, Foundit (formerly Monster), etc.
  1. AI is your best friend - make full use of them. I use different AI for different purposes: ChatGPT 3.5 (free) for proofreading and editing, Bard / Bing for researching various companies' backgrounds and financial histories, and PDF.ai to ask questions about any PDF documents, such as terms and conditions.
  1. Stay positive and patient. If you've just started your job search, it may take several days before your CV goes through their initial screening process. If you need cash flow to get through the time, consider freelancing through platforms like Upwork.

I'm a hardcore introvert and don't like to network or let my situation be known to many people, including ex-colleagues or managers. But I've somehow always managed by being resourceful and relying minimally on networking.

Seriously, is this a single person who keeps posting about DEI here? It's getting old.

I don't even care how you feel about it, just move on and give it a rest. No one is talking about it here.

You know what's not demoralizing? Getting the DEI lackeys all worked up when we point out their virtue signaling ways. They get so worked up, it's adorable.

Cursing not going to help but its true ..market is just not good enough. if you are willing to take a huge cut , do contracting for some time, swallow your Pride of being in VMWARE,

For H1B folks survival is the key..i know its hard. Myself getting lot of rejection despite being an industry expert in my area Some times even interviewer gets hurt by seeing your knowledge and skillset. dont know whats going to click whats not. Ghosting and Recruiter level rejection is now common. Every little thing which can go wrong going wrong.

Get a pedicure. Try only fans and posting feet pics. You can get a good audience built for sending out jars of farts.

Welcome to the reality. I have been applying for last 6 months with same results. If you are actually receiving rejection emails then I would call that a good thing because ghosting is the new norm. Recruiters don’t bother to let you know of the results of your selection even after several rounds of interviews. In past 20 yrs I have never seen so much ghosting. On an average there are 200-400 applicants via LinkedIn. I have recently seen 800-1000 applicants also.

And it will get worse as year end comes. I don’t expect anything to move forward before Feb. Remember more than 250,000 tech workers have been laid off recently. Lot of ex Google/Amzn/Meta folks are still struggling and not yet found anything good.

There are so many folks that I meet that have not even bothered to update resumes. In fact everyone should have been applying and interviewing for last several months. No one was forcing you to take the job if you got one and you still wanted to try your luck against BC M&A playbook. At least it would have educated you about where you stand in the job market. I know where I stand.

Prepare for pay cuts and be ready for contracting jobs. It’s not been easy for a while and will not be easier anytime soon.

You don’t even know if you’re going to be laid off, so relax.

No need to panic, buddy. Breathe. If you need guidance, speak to an Astrologer. That’s better than panicking.

Use chat gpt and brush up resume
Spend at least 4 hours every day reaching out to linkedin network and applying.
I did this for one week and already had three interviews.
There are jobs.
Go outside your comfort zone and apply to other adjacent roles and maybe take a title cut.

Everything is going to be fine people!!!

My advice is to not take it personally. Understand that most resumes are read by bots first and then if you pass the their sniff test its only then that a real human will look at it. Getting a new job in any market is not easy. I have either been laid off or needed to get out from a nasty company several times. And in most cases it was a minimum of 4-5 months before landing anything.

As soon as this deal was announced I started looking. It was over 4 months and over 200+ resumes before I found something. It is indeed frustrating. But look at each day as a new opportunity and forget the rejections. Good luck.

Happened to me too. Except I was gonna get offered but req got cancelled. My inbox is filled with rejections on a daily basis but it’s not gonna deter me from keeping on going. We will land something one of these days as long as we keep going.

Everyone knew about what is coming and while I feel bad for you and everyone in this position, it is incumbent on all to have made necessary preparations and taken appropriate steps
Whatever happens, it is not the end of the world you will find another role and you will be ok ..focus on what you can do to improve your chances

I'm doing my job. If I get laid off, so be it. That's not to say I'm not prepared, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over something that might never happen.

Sorry to hear. What I find interesting (not that this helps you) is that when I warned people months ago to not wait until stuff heats up - I was downvoted by God knows how many people.

It's gonna get worse especially if you haven't skilled up and rely on your vmware ecosystem knowledge.

Not to mention when layoffs happening, there's be 100s if not 1000s of people competing for the same job.

Anyway, good luck.
