Are new hires eligible for severance packages as well? Obviously the minimum (ie. 2 months), but still I would think even if they're on probation they'd still be eligible for that?

It's kind of curious to me why VMware continues to interview and hire at this time. But my manager continues to schedule candidates for me to interview. I did one last week, one this morning and I have another on my calendar for tomorrow. I always ask them if they are aware of Broadcom. Beyond that, they're grownups and can make their own decisions.

@mve+1oIyqKCz most employees needs to stay for 12 months for full benefits of the layoffs. .... may be VP stands for Very Powerful.

2 types of people accepted a role with a company with massive projected layoffs. First group of people that have been hunting for jobs for a while. Can't blame this group of people. You have to take whatever comes. Second, oblivious people have no idea what's going on in the industry and do not do any research. Why join a company that will have major layoffs where you will not qualify for a severance package and will likely be the first one to get booted? One might say, how would anyone know there is a layoff? It is all over public news on VMware being acquired for the last 1 year and layoffs coming. Do your research and you owe it to yourself. Actually, there is this third group of people. Quit a stable but less desirable job and get into VMWare. The grass across is not always greener, they might be just artificial grass.

Just keep in mind that this is not a holistic view of what VMware is and does.

You mean what VMware was.

You made a decision that best fits you. Welcome to the team!

There are a lot of angry and bitter people here fearing that they're about to lose their jobs. They are backed into a corner and are lashing out. Just keep in mind that this is not a holistic view of what VMware is and does. A lot of great teams. We hired many in the last year in our area who are loving it here.

It is basic due diligence. Google a company you are applying to work for. Takes a few minutes. This is not new. It's all on you.

Many many people have joined since the acquisition was first announced, they each made their choice to join the company in spite on any uncertainty - same as you did.

I wouldn't think of it that way. Assuming it's not too long ago that you left your old job, there isn't much for you to lose at VMware, and you should be still employable in the job market. You could even try asking if there are positions open with your previous employer. Unlike those who have years of tenure at VMware and have become accustomed to the life and culture here, transitioning to a new environment presents a significant learning curve.

We have a VP who started a few weeks ago. He has the chance to travel the world for VMware Explore and receive one year’s salary if he is let go.

It’s a conscious decision you or anyone in the same position made, though, and unless you’ve been living under a rock with no internet, you’ve made the decision to try your luck. Good luck though!
