Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

The date has slipped out

The date had slipped out. D-mb people in HR have countdown board to first round of notifications on 10/13. They have to make sure you won’t get a year end bonus having you leave prior to that bonus date in late Dec. so the two months warn act puts as gone on 12/13. One week before bonuses. Merry Xmas.

The good news is, you’ll have a nice holiday and Christmas at home with the family

What groups have been asked if there is anyone wanting to volunteer? I've heard nothing but NO to that option, they aren't accepting volunteers.

If I volunteer for layoff, that's one less person management has to decide to let go. It's normally an option during a layoff, which always includes severance in my experience.

How are you "opting" for early retirement and getting a severance? Are they taking volunteers? Not that I have heard.

Update. The hr white board has been wiped clean and replaced with a smiley face and message good luck with the fun coming…

I have opted for early retirement, time to go, and I'll get a layoff severance (6 month paid vacation). It's a win-win because that's one less person who gets booted. My boss says "it's going to be bad..."

fvw here
consumer do not buy new cellphone is not the fault of the top level management if the revenue is down due to soft market the company need to adjust the headcount accordingly.
this is not charity. Business is making money and satisfying stock holders.
Think of this, if you own a company and revenue is down 25% what would you do?

The big question is if the company is laying off the right person due to favoritism or politics ?

@fvw+1oCgFsYM your argument is precisely the reason rank and file detest status collectors. On one hand you compare your relationship with your team transactional, but on the other hand you control their career growth within the team and how much bonus/RSUs they get and when they get promoted.

you are COMPLETELY out of touch with rank and file probably because you have been status collecting for a long long time.

@fvw+1oCgFsYM, you must be a d--b status collector. Employees are upset because nothing is changing at the top. The people at the top are always the same. The same folks who have been around for decades and have become 'tech boomers'. The same issue is going to crop up again in 2024, 2025 and so on. Execs get millions in stock no matter what is happening. Regular employees can only execute the 'vision' of the upper management. Can you refuse to do your current job and do something else instead because it could be valuable a decade down the line? No!

The current situation at this lousy company is nothing like the homeowner-contractor argument you presented.

please help me out.
when you hire a contractor to do a job,he finishes the job, you pay him and we are both happy.
similar to Q, Q hires employees to do the job
and pay but when the bussiness is slow Q needs to adjust the headcount.
why some employees are so upset...?

"I'd rather just go right away ...." -- but you would miss out on severance pay. 2 weeks per YOS + I think 6 weeks.

The budget for bonuses was very low to begin with. Bonuses are embarrassingly low at Qualcomm to begin with. Reviews can be given without rewarding bonuses so I don't see the point of the OP.

Bonus are not required at anytime. It’s called a bonus - it is not regular pay. Q does not need to have layoffs to not payout bonus - everyone in company is not entitled to bonus…. This post is really misinformed

I’d rather just go right away. Not waiting around for several weeks for the last day.

By CA laws, they still will have to pay bonus.

The countdown is to try to put a deadline on status collectors finalizing the layoff list. Infighting between VPs, senior directors and directors to preserve their cliques has already pushed the date from end of September to mid October.

If there is a further delay, Q will have to shell out bonuses and then layoff people with severance. That will tank the stock.

Most likely it will be done on the 12th, a Thursday; people will leave immediately and return with the computer and monitor the have at home to HR that Friday. The buildings are pretty much deserted on Fridays, so people can clean out their offices and turn in their badges.
