Thread regarding Northwestern Mutual layoffs

Baseball Sponsorship

NM appears to have money to sponsor a bunch of multi-millionaires on a professional baseball team but can't find the money to help employees or their kids with tuition assistance or even a 401k. I wonder how many people will get laid off to pay for this new partnership?

Nice job NM. You invested in a losing team.

Some bellyache about things at NM. Yet the only way they ever leave NM is if they are part of a reduction in force, are fired for cause or decide to retire. Very very rarely do any of the bellyachers leave for other opportunities. Why? We all know the answer why. Because these whiny sniveling clods complete with stagnant skill sets and lousy work ethic are, for all intents and purposes, unemployable outside of NM. That's the stone cold reality ladies and gentlemen.

I can't get a defective keyboard replaced because the company has no money to purchase a new one yet we have money to give to a baseball team. #NewLowForNM

I can assure you the culture is not good at NM. The fear and angst is very visible and is a noticeable distraction to daily work. Layoffs are very real and are happening. Most are unrelated to an employee's performance and financially driven. Mismanagement by senior leaders is 100% to blame for this. This new partnership with the Brewers is nothing more than JES securing season tickets for himself in retirement at the expense of NM and the company's future.

NM has a good culture. No mass layoffs. But only Quiet Firing, Quiet Forcing, Quiet PIPing happen in Quiet bigger chunks in the name of reorg. targeting the higher salaried employees. If your pay is low then you are safe in NM and can enjoy NM culture. You can certainly feel your hike in bravos to meet the inflation.

More complaining from people that see ANY investment as a bad business decision if it doesn’t involve raising their salary by 20k.

Don’t make strategic investments in the future, we need to pay all these scrum masters!!! Lol

Has the marketing department at NM really become this pathetic and desperate?

I know many folks have been laid off and it is totally based on financial pressures. I also know of many good folks that have been laid off. But being objective, NM has to continue doing it’s business and this sponsorship is a part of it. Layoffs and sponsorship can co-exist. As sh---y as it is, it is a fact.

I’m not in IT but have heard of layoffs here and there, nothing widespread. My antidotal experience is the older IT employees are getting canned likely due to their higher salaries and high number of PTO days. Classic ageism.

Just do your job well and make sure your manager thinks the same and you’ll be fine. Not rocket science. It’s extremely rare that anyone good gets laid off.

@szd+1oCSWcdQ Some people in IT have been laid off in small chunks. At first it was billed as just reorganizations, but SLT finally admitted that they are also happening to flatten our company's expense curve.

Has Northwestern Mutual recently laid off a large number of employees in their IT department to now outsource their work oversees?
