Thread regarding Optum layoffs

the simple truth

here's the simple truth that no one will say to your face: FOR-PROFIT COMPANIES CARE ABOUT PROFITS. if that's a revelation, I'm sorry for the jarring experience. at the end of the day, every employee at every for-profit company in the world is either contributing to the bottom line or is taking from it. when the conversations turn to, "oh [sp-t]! revenue is down! what do we do?" ...the first suggestion on the table is not going to be, "let's cut our bonuses and benefits." know why? because the people who make the decisions are the ones who would lose. so they 'trim' and 'streamline' and 'adjust to market needs' by removing other people's jobs. it's not awesome. but that's life: it's messy and there are no easy answers. lots of love and support to those affected.

no one in the us empire goes to work for the wonderful culture and coffee in the lounge. Most with a working brain stem go to work to get money. You do your job, go home. Rinse, lather repeat amigas.

The simple truth is that this company has record profits this year from the monies received from American dollars including American contracts paid for by American tax dollars. It is now choosing to lay off thousands of Americans and replacing them with a non-American work force. A workforce that will be managing sensitive American health information.

I do find it weird that a company that has a record breaking first quarter is still layong folks off. Just get it done and stop ki-ling morale.

does implying name calling help this thread? I'm confused. I thought we were talking about layoffs not insulting people.

Not flat wrong. Not inflammatory, unless you're incapable of grasping the concept of "profit" beyond merely monetary terms. Profit comes in the form of self satisfaction, moral credit and virtue too. Almost nobody does things for others absent some motivation to gain something, even if it's self worth.

But bonuses and benefits are often reduced. For years at Optum and elsewhere, performance incentive bonuses were not paid at full rates, and at least one year, at all. In 2010, directors and above got no salary increase so that levels 28 and below would.

Leadership make decision all the time that benefit the business and employees at their expense. Not always, but it happens a lot more than those who are ignorant or believe in Marxist fairy tales would like to admit.

Non-profits are the same. Every organization faces the same dynamics.

I would disagree with that completely. you don't stop to help someone because of "incentive for profit." so clearly there are other motivators than profit. saying "nobody does anything for anybody without the incentive for profit" is inflammatory and flat wrong.

I would never say that it's exclusive to for-profit companies. over and over in these threads, people ask, "WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?!" that's the answer: for-profit companies want profit. that's not an endorsement or admonishment of anyone else.

Without the incentive for "profit", nobody does anything for anybody. That's human nature.

I can show you financial statements of not-for-profit companies and you'd be shocked at what's buried in the expenses.

Why not take a look at the United Way and check out the salaries? They're a non-profit.

Also, check out the salary for the CEO for the non-profit Feeding America.

Nice way to be a non-profit, huh.
