Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Senior Director and above meeting this morning

I believe there was a meeting of Senior Directors and above earlier this morning attended by Betsy. It was said in the meeting that we will know our fate at the end of this month (August). The usual 3 options:

Gone, 6 month transition or Stay

Did anyone else hear this.

Total BS - just more people trying to find out what’s happening. I know that those statements were not said @ the monthly leadership mtg. Raghu and Betsy have been pretty transparent.

Maybe there was more than one meeting and those in attendance interpreted things differently. Glass half empty glass half full. I believe the ones who came on earlier and said there will be notifications for those being let go on Day Zero. It jives with what BC employees have been saying. So we have some deniers. Some people are still in denial over regulators. It’s a done deal. They’re probably just ironing out small details. As to those who said wait til you get an official announcement, it doesn’t really help the most vulnerable. If they can be given a heads up so they can position themselves better and help their families, it is the right thing to do when you have that information to communicate.

"Soon vmware folks are going to flood the job market"

Which is exactly the reason why many are already searching now. Why wait, when you already know it takes time to find a new role that's a good fit. I'm not waiting, I'm searching

No loyalty will be left in retained employees.

They will be paid very well. That outweighs loyalty in almost all cases.

I think August 31st or September 1st as the date for communicating decisions on employment status is not accurate. It is public information that the FTC has not ruled on the merger. Broadcom would be unlikely to communicate employment decisions prior to the FTC ruling. Everyone will likely know by the end of October, but it would be surprising - and improbable - that decisions will be made and communicated in two weeks' time.

After the layoffs, those laidoff will be searching job and those retained will be searching as well. No loyalty will be left in retained employees. Soon vmware folks are going to flood the job market causing insane competition for each job

I don't understand why now all of a sudden folks are coming in claiming they also attended the meeting but with different sets of information (and being quite vague). Obviously, someone is lying. Why? So unkind.

Obviously someone is lying, i just don't understand the motivation for it. What is wrong with these people? Go live your life instead of upsetting people in a difficult situation.

I attended the meeting and I can assure no talk of layoffs was done. Raghu did mention that some people may have roles and some don’t and people who stay must focus on integration etc etc.

I wouldn’t generalize that all managers are bad. There’s people in leadership positions that are open and down to earth. It is true there’s bad ones out there, there’s also those that follow rules by the book (which doesn’t make them bad) and there’s those that feel empathy and connect with their team/subordinates. For example, my manager/director is an excellent person that I am proud to follow and keeps it real about all this situation.

That's great! What has your manager/director told you about this?

For those from a company acquired by VMWare go to workday, job tab you will see your date of acquisition as well as your continuous service date

In what world would managers know? If enough engineers get cut then managers would have to get cut too, im almost certain my manager knows nothing and is himself scared for his own job. Companies like Broadcom with such flat orgs are definitely not shielding our managers & sr managers

may i ask how old are u? If you are not as naive as a 5 years old, you should realize that managers will never tell us the truth.

Think about this--if your manager tell you the truth that your team will all be cut, what would u do? Would u still be actually working? or just coast until the last day? Managers need peasants (i.e. yourself) to do the grunt work so managers can do nothing and collect the cash.

Do you think managers are going to tell the truth? They probably don't know much more than we do and if they do, I highly doubt my manager would tell me the truth lol based on what we've chatted about pertaining the acquisition. But perhaps your managers are more transparent with you

So Aug 31 layoff is from VMW just like the layoff they did in April? Doesn't VMW usually have August layoffs?

What I read was the September 1st notices are only for those who are leaving October 31st. I think that’s where the confusion comes from

@1lub+1o8YTjNi

What do you mean by there is no "end of this month"? So will we get notices on Sept 1st or not? I'm a bit confused as to what was fully communicated at this meeting. Thanks so much!

Wow thank you to everyone that provided info from the meeting, appreciate it. And to anyone thinking this is a rumor, grow up.

I think I read somewhere in this thread, that if offered a 6 month stay with option of extension or to leave outright, it would be better to leave without stay. Can someone who heard the plans clarify what they think would be best?

Also not to be the annoying salesperson here, but did they clarify % of cuts or quantities by division? Or will we see this equally across all BUs of VMware?

Any talk of immediate vesting of outstanding RSUs

FWIW the company deleted unvested RSUs for the employees laid off in April

It’s not a rumor…if you think it is, you are intentionally sticking your head in the sand. Giving notices prior to the acquisition closing is a pattern with all of Broadcom’s past acquisitions. What makes VMware different? Unless you are a director or higher, you are just making uneducated assumptions

So this is going to be communicated by VMW HR on behalf of Broadcom? Somehow I find that hard to believe. These are 2 separate companies and BC legally cannot serve VMW employees any kind of "notices" That would be interference in VMW operations.

And VMW cannot serve a notice unless they are planning to do layoffs themselves - which VMW isn't going to do because they are not going to radically alter the structure of the company so close to acquisition. This would undermine what Broadcom wants to execute with their new company.

Somehow, I have a hard time believing that this rumor is legit.

Sorry previous post should have said 'don't' think rebadging.....

So Sep 1 is definitely D-Day then for all regions?

Unless you’re an engineer, isn’t a transition better than being permanent? Coz you get that additional 50%? If you get a perm offer they can lay you off suddenly and you don’t get that extra perk? RSUs will be useless if they don’t vest by the time you get RIFed

Post ID: @1yrm+1o8YTjNi

Yeah, doing think 'rebadging' is a thing in Ireland either....and also, severance the time order management got the snip was 6 wks for every year of employment, so some people with eg 10 yrs got 60 wks pay

Can you “rebadge” in the UK? Turn from permanent to contractor?

I know you can move to a service provider via tupe. Not heard of anyone being turned to a contractor without being made redundant (laid off) first.

There will be no tears shed for the VPs and Senior VPs who have train-wrecked the Sales and Customer Success organizations, although they should be penalized a year's salary for their results rather than given one as a severance package.

"How s years of service calculated for guys from acquisition like CB? Only years with VMWare or does CB time count?"

Something else that HR should include in a Layoff FAQ email if they ever decide to do one...hint hint

But I'm 99% sure your tenure with an acquired company rolls over.
