Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Changes already…

Just received notification that we have to come in the office more effective immediately. 3 days now and then 4 days starting end of October. What other changes can we expect?

Every non-agreement employee should use their benefits and go out on short term disability for stress/anxiety.

The bottom line is that we all need each other. Many crafts, many different skills, tasks and responsibilities. The more employees that continue to pay into railroad retirement, the better for all of us. Fragmented and selfish mentality benefits no one but the individual. This is one reason why having a multitude of different unions does not help us move forward together. The company uses adversarial bargaining against us. We need a strong and consolidated railroad union to keep the unity that is necessary to stand strong against the greed.

@1suy Plenty of people are working in UP offices with dubious education credentials or none at all.

Institutions like the “University” of Phoenix have no recognized accreditation. That’s a problem for many reasons. UP seems to have tried getting around this by sending managers with dubious credentials to certificate programs at second-rate state schools, presumably to obfuscate the dubious nature of their primary credentials.

Interesting to read that Jim v. has already upset so many good employees.I can read between the lines in these notes and sense the anger, jealousy, frustration, , etc.

All of you field workers need to relax. I've worked on the field for 11 years and just got to hq a year ago. I chose to go to hq to have a better home life and not work overnights with crazy days off. Take it easy talking down on hq workers you don't realize that you need them just as much as they need you. And yes the fact that we have to be In office 4 days a week now is a major problem now that we have to change what we were accustomed to. I took a job with hq to work from home and be with my children and now I can't be there for my little ones anymore. I CHOSE to work for hq for a reason and now that was stripped away from me.

Might as well get started early....
The railway labor act is antiquated and goes against the ethics of modern labor laws.

@1pcx I work in signal. In my opinion it doesnt matter but in case it does to you, I also happen to be college educated. Even one has an iq of 140+ I assure you learning how and when to use dynamic braking vs how much air to put under it and when to apply that air no one is gonna learn just that in half an hour. I am not even gonna tell you to pick up a set of circuit plans and discern what info those convey. So lets start real easy. Challenge yourself to get proper on track authority in a big city, w/ a big hub, with multiple tracks, with multiple subdivisions with just a timetable and track profiles. If you thinks thats unfair and if you think we all get enough training to do that before we are told to go fix something while fouling the track then here is another one. Try taking a spike maul and see how long it takes you to drive a spike into a new tie. If I had to guess we all are spread too thin, but if you arent laboring in the heat or in the cold and your at home w/ loved ones on most holidays be kind to those that arent afforded those luxuries. Heck if you get to break for lunch and/or use a bathroom while you are at work, remember that alone is a luxury many front line railroaders go without.

I could learn to drive your train, you know, the one without the steering wheel ???…..in 30 minutes or less….kinda like making a Rachel Ray supper. But you could never learn to type 100 words per minute, or use a computer.

Yes we should all stick together, but the office folks need to remember for many years if someone from the field was a sc--w UP, they moved UP. Meaning if they couldnt cut it in the field they were often promoted (moved out of the way) to office jobs. So please before calling field employees racial slurs remember a lot of field employees were victims of the ‘peter principle’. They were effectively punished for being competent at their jobs.

For the people who think the office people don't do anything and want to act like office workers need to come into the office. Your paychecks and you claims and all your supplies get ordered and handled by these office folks. Field people cannot do thier jobs if there are not office people. and FYI there are union office people, remember unions should stick together.

It’s so disappointing. We were taking positive strides moving forward as a company, but now it looks like we going back to the old way of thinking and doing. I’m sure office folks will be walking around with hot suit jackets, ties, and panty hose soon dealing with with new leadership team we have. We definitely need some younger employees in these key leadership positions and even on the board so we can have some diverse thoughts and input.

Dress for your work day; Always wear comfortable sneakers for the moment you decide to walk out the door and tell them to shove it.

This is a railroad. If you work in an office, we don’t need you anyway. Brush up your resume.
