There has been many a topic devoted to our beloved CFO....MoPo, Money Potti, Moneyish...or whatever you might prefer to call him. Consensus is that he is not a popular figure in 3M and his decisions have led to lot of angst in the last few years
Let's look at bit deeper into his background and how that plays a role into decisions that he makes for Mother Mining.
Now Money Potti is a B.Com graduate from India ( verified from numerous reliable financial websites). Or in other words he has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from India , similar to a Bachelor of Finance degree from the US. Now what kind of students usually go for that kind of a degree from India?
Now talking to various people of Indian origin over many years, the idea I get is..... the best and brighttest students study mostly engineering subjects in the IITs ( Indian Institute of Technologies), followed by the regional engineering colleges, next crop of students study mostly science based subjects in other reputed colleges ( it is usually difficult to find a job in science after completing a basic Bachelor's degree) and the rest pursue degrees in arts and commerce. The best in many areas including commerce later on pursue a MBA from the IIMs (Indian Institute of Management).
This has been the case for at least the last 30, 35 years or so. So that's Money Potti's basic foundational educational background.
Thus, we shouldn't be surprised that he does not get the R&D based culture of 3M with that kind of a background. Plus he made his name in GE which is known for its infamous lean and mean methods of running or rather ruining an established company.
