Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

Layoffs

When do you think your manager decided to lay ppl off? was it months before when the company was looking at reducing headcount or do you think it was a last-minute decision? Just curious if by the time you got your year-end your manager already knew you were a goner

I would make sure you are in the office the number of days your division requires. The higher ups are watching that stuff very closely and putting people on PIPs as well as terminating people too. I would get involved with different employee groups, network as others mentioned, and don't just be another number. Yes, keep your head down and stay out of trouble, but maybe being totally invisible can make you expendable. Be a wealth of knowledge, up your training, sharpen the saw as they say, and become irreplaceable. As always, save money, keep your resume polished, network on LinkedIn and other platforms.

Even though higher-ups decide on who is getting laid off, I am sure your direct manager has some input into it.? How else would higher-ups decide who to let go as they don’t know the employee personally

I was layed off in a previous group at Citi.
My manager knew about 15 minutes before the rest of us.
During that 15 minutes she didn't have time to grieve losing her own job as she had to book a conference room and gather us, so the rest of us could be told.
With such a hasty set meeting, we all knew what was coming our way.

After the meeting she told us all to go home. I gladly left and did nothing when I came back the next day other than look at job boards.

They are decided at a higher level then your direct. Layoffs that are coming up names are in already.

I believe in some instances, weeks ahead of time.

Same ole, same ole. Either way the mitigation recipe is the same.
Build up your savings to 6 months or more of pay.
Keep your resume updated.
Don’t forget to network outside of the company.
Troll the external job boards to see what’s in demand.
At work, keep your head down and work hard.
If the unthinkable happens, you have a plan, you are prepared.

I know it is not the manager directly. I’m just asking when they know the decision has been made that you were the one to be laid off. Is it last minute or months ahead of time

You realize managers don’t lay people off, right? Those decisions are decided ar a way higher level and your manager usually doesn’t even get a say in which people on their team is laid off.

Now if you’re asking about being terminated or put on PIP, then yeah your manager would know and be making the case that your performance is sub par
