How are people supposed to continue working and producing results in this environment? Why even go to work?

OP, the time from now to notifications is pretty short. Management understands that productivity will be low till then.
Use the time widely to beef up yiur resume and start applying. If you are not affected then anyways all is well

If only the layoff was based on performance. But since we were told it is not, then where is the motivation to continue busting our a** to excel at work?

take care of yourself and family

My motto is
Always help people if you can
No one comes to work to enjoy

Lets try to make each other's life easier if possible

You are missing the point. Nobody is trying to make anyone's job worse. It's the prolonged and drawn out nature that is the issue. You cannot announce layoff and then expect people to work as if nothing happended for 2 months. And that should be the least of worries. S**t will hit the fan after people leave and those left behind will have to manage more with less.

What nonsense. I'm not "pep talking" anyone. It's a bad and depressing situation, but whether I think I lose my job or not I'm not going to be a jerk to others and expect them to take on more work because I'm unmotivated about that, especially for such a short time until we all know how we are impacted. Let's make my peers jobs worse because I'm upset and bitter? Not saying everyone doesn't have a right to be upset and bitter. But your peers are not in a good mind state either about this same as you.

You are a paragon of leadership. Nice pep talk for leading the lambs to sla-ghter.

SO you will base YOUR character on OTHER people's behavior levels above you? Is letting down your peers, people that are just like you justified because you don't like leadership? They may feel the same way. No man. That's not right. Character isn't based on other's examples. It's YOU, you own that, you define that.

"The bigwigs are paid millions to spot the big icebergs early on and prevent disasters."
it's like the only job of the bigwig
if they cannot do that what the heck are we paying them so much money for
maybe their actual job is to siphon money off to top investors

It's called character. You may not give a hoot about the company, how it's run, etc etc, but you shouldn't let the people you support directly down, because then they have to carry your load.

Management screwed up and want the working folks to pay for their mistakes. Qualcomm needs transparency and accountability. Were there early signals, why did we miss them? The bigwigs are paid millions to spot the big icebergs early on and prevent disasters. I feel the company has been gutted structurally and now will be gutted psychologically if they can hold the execs accountable

Very true, the company managements need to stretch at work to close the uncertainty asap. Even emails volume, coworkers ping have reduced now!
