Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Optum veterans - does this happen often?

In your time here at optum, has this been the worst? I’ve been told people haven’t seen it this bad in over 10 years.

I want to know, if I survive layoffs, is it even worth trying to grow, or will I also eventually be cut?

  1. Develop your skills as Optum offers good training opportunities especially in the tech space
  2. Learn to perk up your resume
  3. Look out for opportunities to exit (if layoffs hit your group, it will eventually come towards you); I know many who did not leave when they had external offers, only to be laid-off and not been able to find a satisfactory role for months.

No longer with optum but I was in optum corp training and in 2019 half of my direct peer group was let go including my boss. It was several people with huge tenure.

“ if I survive layoffs, is it even worth trying to grow,”

People just lost their jobs and you’re asking about your growth potential. Just wow!

Be a good performer and you'll be pretty safe. I've built a great reputation for myself and I've never once thought I would be laid off. I've been moved but never cut. I like my growth options

Always try to grow, especially if you can do it on the company's nickle. Take every class/cert you are offered, Optum Tech University or hat ever they are currently calling it, etc.

Personally, I wouldn't leave unless I was getting at least a 30%-40% pay bump and had a guarantee in writing that the new role as good for at least a year. Focus on skill development, stacking accomplishments you can list on a resume, resume tuning, and preparing for the next job you want. You don't owe any corpo any more loyalty than they are going to show you.

If the numbers are what they’re saying they are, this is the worst it’s been in a very long time. Last big layoff was recession back in 2008/2009.
