Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Quit UP with / without 2 weeks notice?

For those who already quit. Did you give two weeks notice? If so, did they just walk you of the property?

I bumped to an xb, continuously laid off just before I was called, and used my plds and vacations as available. Ran up attendance points and by the time I was finished with Amtrak engineer Training in Delaware, I was hit w a charge letter for hearing. Still haven't turned in keys, Zebra, or radio. Eff that company. And fun fact, 13 of the 16 people in my class were ex cons and engineers from UP and BN. With seniority ranging from 8 years to 26. We are all so happy we made the jump! It's so chill at Amtrak. Management is cool and highly respected. They're actually leaders. Better pay too. Eff UP!

I walked in, asked my union rep to meet me in the managers office and resigned. On the way out I got to say bye to a few of the good coworkers I liked, I’d like to say bye to a few more but at that point I wasn’t an employee. For days later people we’re texting me asking if it was “true”, I said yup! Got my vacation check in the bank 3-5 days later. Best part was that UP kept harassing me for the $25 I owed them for tuition reimbursement for a year after.

My coworkers have either given two weeks and were walked off, showed up and quit or went on vacation and never showed up again. The vacation way is the funniest. The manager just sits there in disbelief like they’re going to walk in the door while everyone tells them they’re long gone! UP has been really pushing the family thing again but we all know we’re just a liability to them.

Be sure to use all vacation , personal days off etc , before you quit or retire. I know many that were not paid the unused days.

In addition to the good advice that has been given about not telegraphing resignation intentions, or expecting any reasonable or customary good will from UP, the employee should already have removed any personal belongings, including tools, clothing, etc from lockers, storage facilities etc. prior to resignation. Anything left behind may no longer be accessible as the ex employee would be now be considered a trespasser if attempting to return for these personal items.

They will walk you off and not pay you the two weeks Because your resignation the union won’t help you get the 2 weeks pay. Just tell them the day you are leaving

The very fact that any company will walk you off of their property after being polite about stating your intentions to leave the company speaks very loudly about the type of company that they are. If any company does that, then that's not a very good company. Do not give a 2 week notice at the UP unless you're absolutely ready to consider the day you give your notice as your last day. I don't know of anyone that ever gave a 2 week notice, and wasn't walked off the same day. Don't worry though, because the rest of the world is watching the railroads for their ongoing service problems.

For anyone non-agreement who has resigned in the last few years before retirement age, what are your options if you have the management pension? Lump sum payout, rollover, stays at UP?

This company doesn’t care in fact they encourage you to find another job. We have had multiple bosses say that other railroads are hiring. It’s actually pathetic that’s why this is the worst company to work for in the United States.

Do NOT telegraph your intentions until you are 100% sure you want to go AND 100% sure you have everything lined up because they MAY just walk you out as soon as you let them know.

If you give them 2 weeks notice and you need that two weeks of work and aassociated pay you may find yourself two weeks short of pay.

Employeers say they want the consideration of notice, it is rarely reciprocated or appreciated.

IF you have any form of leave of absence available I suggest taking that approach and seeing if your exit plan is a viable one and it allows you to return if it isn't

Good luck

I hope your coworker went to UPS. Drivers now will average $170,000 per year, including the benefit package. Hourly rate $49.00. Mo mandatory overtime on days off. Teamsters negotiated contract. How are the railroad unions staying in business ? It’s time for radical change.

I had a coworker who one morning we watched as he nervously walked into the managers office w/ a printed letter in his hand. He told the manager he wasnt sure if he wanted to work here anymore, the manager reached over and sorta swiped the letter from him, started reading it, and stopped reading before finishing the letter. He asked if this was a letter of resignation, the employee reached back and took his letter while saying yes. The manager immediately told him to hand over his keys and told him he had to get off company property. This coworker was a good employee, safe, productive, knew his job, helped others, etc. I have never seen a manager not have at least a short discussion as to why the employee wants to quit. I have a brother in law in the border patrol, he has quit 2-3 times. He hands in his badge tells his boss to f-off and his supervisors give him a week or so, then they call him back telling him to come back to work, he does and everyone carries on.
