I noticed that a lot of people have lost hope that it is possible to make it to retirement here. Anyone else besides me still hoping to make it? I must admit I get a little annoyed every time someone tries to discourage me. Despite the fact that I don't have much time until retirement, I am often told it's better to look at other opportunities outside UP.

Medical retirement ahead, six months minimum I’ll have my time!
If you as an individual are hoping to retire from UP, sure you prob can. But at what cost? If you are a conductor / switchman with enough seniority that if they get their wish to put one conductor on duty for 8hrs in a truck who is the conductor for every train that passes thru then yeah you’ll make it to retirement. If you dont have that kind of seniority start applying to become a manager or transfer to another craft.
Nope! I gave up on wondering about retirement. A decent retirement from the UP is just about a pipe dream at this point. Sure, it would've been nice to make it to retirement. I'm also staying realistic about it as well. The corporate side of the railroads is and always has been the problem. Until a corporate shake-up occurs and PSR is dropped, the problem is always going to be there. Vena coming back as the CEO, is just bad no matter how you spin it. Good luck to the ones that try to make it to retirement. All I can say though is that you better have a backup plan in case you don't.
So it's the ones that will retire soon that are worried???? Really??????? Kind of selfish don't you think??
Yea same here they’re never going to hire more people I’ve been a faithful employee for 23yrs and looking to start all over at another road. Should have did it 10yrs ago I keep saying the same thing. There is no way Iam going to retire from here. The last time this Vena was here they lost a lot of great people smart hardworking people that would go beyond their job duties. Now nobody cares or scared that they will loose their job soon. Who wants to work for a company that you go into work everyday and every day they’re scared to loose their job. I really wanted to retire from this company and do a good job. But now Iam just done trying to be with this company. Everyone who was employed here from the years he was here was just he-l. Now he’s the ceo and if you think there isn’t going to be mass layoffs you’re a fool. That’s what he’s done from all the other railroads to FedEx. Mass layoffs. Every boss is saying the same thing where is he going to cut first. It’s all about power to him not money. He’s worth 9billion dollars. Power he love destroying people’s lives.
I can't stand it no more!!
True. Working for that shi**ty company is no fun anymore. The other day I watched some of my coworkers, older guys who put in so much time with up. I don't want to be like them. Poor health condition, they walk like zombies, no happiness in their look.
It's time to go... Fcuk up
What opportunities outside of the railroad after them taking so much for rr retirement already?
I have over 20yrs into RRR but I’m in my late 40’s. It has gotten so bad I dont think I will make it till 60. My mental & physical health is too important to deal w/ this place much longer. Equip is falling apart, repairs go undone, managers act like if we employees just try harder instead of admitting we dont have enough people. Cant succeed here, its demoralizing. Now I know why all the old SP guys had such bad attitudes. I consider working somewhere else even if it means I work till age 67 before drawing RRR. Thats how bad working at UP has become.
