Unpacking Amazon’s stealthy mass layoff strategy in Seattle

Amazon, frequently under the microscope for its pioneering but often criticized management techniques, now requires its employees to commit to office work at least three days a week. This new policy will necessitate some employees to uproot their lives and move to larger hubs closer to main offices.

“ I don’t know where this resistance to meet people in the office is coming from.”

Let me explain it to you. Just like Amazon convinced the masses they didn’t need to shop at a brick and mortar to get their shopping done, COVID WFH made us all realize technology can also allow us to work remotely… in the same way Amazon replaced commuting to brick and mortar shops. We should have started to abandon the outdated office culture when the fax machine came into being along with the PC and internet. Commuting and sitting in a cube is a waste. Anyone that thinks different has their commute as their biggest contribution to the company each day.

"Once one loses a high paying job, then it is much easier to convince the spoiled brat to come to the office."

what office, it is more like a chicken coop or pig pen
one can be more productive in a train station
go ahead and layoff the high tech employees, see if you can do the work einstein
i am surprised they don't just lay a trough right in front of the workers and abolish the cafeteria
if the people above get any d-mber and more skilless we can replace them with the 3 stooges

I was laid off and they paid me to go! I've never felt better! That place is toxic and you don't realize it until you're gone and your health improves.

I was thrilled to get a package! Worst place I ever worked and this was in Public Sector Sales. I'm living my best life on what they paid me. Bye bye to MR and VS! The two worst managers ever.

“Now requires its employee to commit to office work at least 3 times a week”.
Well, it is not “now”.

It has been the case with the vast majority of development companies since I started working 20 years ago. The difference is that we were supposed to be taking daily stand ups or meetings (before Agile) every single freaking day. I don’t know where this resistance to meet people in the office is coming from.

Anyone, employers can keep triggering mass layoffs as needed to recycle high tech people. Once one loses a high paying job, then it is much easier to convince the spoiled brat to come to the office.

Sorry, but the WFH crowd lost the war. I strongly believe employers will continue to recycle folks thru mass layoff to keep us humble, if needed.

People are very naive.
