Thread regarding Walgreens layoffs

Story on layoffs

Hi everyone,

My name's Yowei Shaw and I'm a journalist working on a story for the podcast This American Life (www.thisamericanlife.org) about layoffs, after getting laid off myself from NPR (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/25/us/npr-layoffs-podcasts.html).

It was an awful experience and I'm so sorry Walgreens is facing layoffs as well.

Which is why I'm reaching out. I'm looking to talk to workers who know or suspect layoffs are coming, but are still waiting to find out who's on the list. I'm hoping this story can shed light on what it's like to go through this and some of the larger questions and issues that surround layoffs.

If you're open to talking, please get in touch this week or next at shaw.yr@gmail.com. I can tell you more about what I'm working on, and if it helps, we can speak on background or off the record. Feel free to pass this along to anyone who's in the same situation and if you have any leads, I'm all ears.

Thanks for considering. Sending my very best to you and your colleagues.

Oh and here's my website (www.yoweishaw.com) if you want to find out more about me and my previous work.

Take care,
Yowei

Another sign that Walgreens is hurting is when their frontline employees (at the stores) are wearing noticeably cheap id badges. It is a piece of paper, with the employee's name on it stuffed into a very cheap looking piece of plastic. It does not look professional and this is the first thing someone sees when interacting with an employee.

I also suspect they are masking the layoffs under the opi--d lawsuit because someone (or group of people) missed the boat on their project timeline for digital transformation and restructuring the company. They have been cutting costs and supposedly lean for over 10 years so it is a surprise that they still have costs that they can cut. If the plan is to reduce the RETAIL footprint it makes sense with the types of layoffs going on. Don't use the opi--d issue as the excuse.

So sad this is the way of Walgreens. Could someone explain why insurance to cover the different types of dr-g lawsuits, especially those related to dr-gs such as the opi--d lawsuit or labor laws. What about suing the executives to give back all of the stock / monetary compensation and bonuses they were given, especially those people that were in charge during the entire opi--d situation. Shareholders trusted them and they were in charge with the ultimate responsibility to know what is going on in the company and missed it.

I hope Walgreens goes out of business. I will never shop there again. All my prescriptions now belong to CVS. Awful company to work for. Good bye Walgreens!!!! Awful!

More layoffs are coming in the next few weeks! They will be consolidating regions. The fiscal year starts September 1st, so announcements should be soon.
