Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

Let me count the ways

Workplace bullying is synonymous with our culture at Devon. Not only during this so called “merger of equals” that was really just a thinly veiled cover for an acquisition, but throughout the last decade. Situations such as:

Falsely accusing the target of making errors
Using nonverbal intimidation tactics such as glaring or the silent treatment Continually changing the rules or metrics for success
Constantly criticizing and refusing to acknowledge quality work
Starting malicious rumors about the target
Isolating the target from other workers
Yelling or public ally humiliating the target
Stealing credit for work done by the target
Making unreasonable demands
Sabotaging the target’s work
Discounting the targets feelings of perspectives

I have witnessed 90% of these, but especially during the last two years as we invited another company in and proceeded to cull them one by one.

As we saw in the last survey, confidence is low that anything will be done to rectify the poisonous culture we’ve cultivated.

The behavior displayed is really pretty remarkable, incredible what poor human beings wander the halls in some instances. Pricing several years ago created the chaos they needed and, along with the useful id--ts, got them over the finish line in their culture war. O&g is a small world, they operate with the fear that they know deep down what awaits them and their minions in most places outside the tower.

Ah yes the good old workplace abuse playbook.

  1. Employee performs well and/or speaks up
  1. Abuser creates a false narrative, sabotages, or otherwise demeans the target to reinforce their power.
  1. Target has nowhere to turn. HR works for management, coworkers operate in fear, and higher ups typically side with the abuser.

I’m sure the leadership at Devon has their reasons for fostering such a lovely culture, but excuses (reasons) don’t help make things better, they only offer a rationale for not trying. I am sorry you have to deal with that kind of environment.
