Always been a Unionised Gravy Train.
Surprised it lasted so long
Maker lads got what they wanted in the end, collapsed the plant, getting their payouts whilst the others who are young lose out and have to start all over again.
No good complaining who or what is to blame for 3m closing move on .when many of you will be earning minimum wage in a warehouse it will give you time to reflect maybe just how good you had it before and maybe if more of you worked together has a team it might still be a viable business
This post is more of a positive one, rather than a name calling one that will benefit nobodies future. Just seen a post on Facebook regarding a brand new warehouse over at Appleby magna, Mercia park. I would have thought most people from 3M are capable of the jobs here. How’s the time to get in as it’s just opening! Here’s to new opportunities!
Yes I too recall that happening, disgraceful.the management who run the maker knows correct procedures on cleaning certain areas up,not some numpty walking round thinking they run the place. Many many years too late, but she’s finally paid the price.Karma always come back to bite you.Horrible woman, even her own family don’t like her.
This is is why it’s difficult being a 3M Manager. How do you know they were cancerous particles, were they labelled as such. Part of the reason Atherstone is going is because operators loved stating it was unsafe cuz they knew Managers would back down
I too blame bad management for its downfall, poor decisions were made at the drop of a hat, with no insight or knowledge. I clearly remember one manager demanding that someone was to sweep up very dangerous cancerous particles, even after being told no she insisted. After the task had been started she was confronted and told that it’s absolutely not happening she shrugged her shoulders without a care or apology at all, not long after the young chap was finished by her. Very poor decision making, and even worse culture of management. How some of these people ever become managers is beyond me.
The comment below, who are you referring too?
Jesus can’t win with certain people. Moaning like mad that the place was still open during covid, even though it was ran as safely as possible, now it’s shutting down the same people are moaning again! Be careful what you wish for
To those refusing to work until they got jackets; keep hold of them, you’ll need them come next winter when you can’t afford to put the heating on
I’m surprised to see grown adults crying over the situation. Especially certain ones. To me, didn’t seem one bit interested in the place over the years, now they are heartbroken. If only they worked together as a team to get stuff done, and ran to the best of the machine’s ability maybe the place wouldn’t be doomed.
Time some of you lived in the real world but now yours chance .being in a entitled position earning a fortune compared similar workers doing similar manufacturing jobs for a lot less money in this area probably turned some of you into spoilt brats .maybe some you should of thought about just how fortunate you were to have jobs there and maybe if people worked together more when had the chance you might not be in situation now .some I don't daubt will do better leaving but yeah many won't your see just how cr-p it is out there .you don't know what you have till it's gone
All this is just too much to take in, I’m going on the sick. Ha ha
These comments are more like it, I for one will definitely be spending more time with my grandchildren. It’s been a blast. Have a goodun folks
Yes very good points of view, at least we haven’t been had over, 3M has moved on with the times, making us all redundant. Many agency over the years have been unfairly targeted and booted out the door for no reason whatsoever, some of them being extremely good operators with a lot of machine knowledge! We have been lucky enough to not experience the game of thrones like attitude. Most of us have our own kids and even grandkids we can look after. Roll on the good times.
Excellent previous comment. There is life after 3M.
In recent years I’ve found 3M to be very damaging in my mental health and know a lot of others will feel the same.
I’m not at retirement age and whilst I’m nervous and apprehensive, I actually feel like a weight has been lifted.
Here’s to better times, remember there’s more to life than money!!
Come on guys, we’ve seen lots of people get finished over the years, especially agency staff. Every single one has got another job, chin up and let’s move on. Whether you take the plunge when you can, or stay to what I believe will be a very bitter end, there’s still light at the end of the tunnel. Let’s not blame each other, let’s be grateful for the time it’s lasted. Just looked for jobs now, plenty of pickers, packers, and machine operators jobs locally, or better still, speak to those that have already taken early retirement, they have never looked back! Maybe it’s time for some of us to do it too. Enjoy life, not moan about it.
It was good while it lasted…. Now let’s move on. Plenty of jobs out there. Just not with the sick pay.
Things we have to consider here is that we as a nation voted to leave the EU, which consequently put prices of materials and electricity through the roof, can you imagine just how much the lasers use alone? This is out of 3Ms control, and taking huge chucks of profits just to turn the things on!
This on top of huge amounts of waste throughout the site is a catastrophic amount of money down the drain. Put on top the people playing the system in sick pay, and refusing to work. It’s a wonder it’s lasted as long as it has.
3M are partly to blame too with the choice of people they have employed: sm--k heads, alcoholics, general laziness.
Trying to claw back, with introducing LEAN, all that did was suffocate every area, not allowing it to run properly. Even the people who wanted to work was restricted to run things as they should do. I thought things would improve when mein fuhrer got pushed out, unfortunately it looks like the damage has been done.
Fact is, we have lost some of the best operators over the last 10 years, which has put big effects on those particular areas, which have been replaced by newly trained operators who don’t know the machines, and haven’t seen the situations that arise. You can’t buy experience.
The place is a dump and has been for a long time, highly overpaid for unskilled work, was only ever going one way. Oh well good luck in the real world boys, have a feeling your going to need it.
Maker boys thinking they own the place, refusing to lift a finger at times and happily sit there for a 12 hour shift. Come back to bite you, only being in your 30s you’ll have a long time to think of these days….
Looking through at these comments, laughing at the fact people are losing their jobs, and boasting how they left maintenance and got a better job, I can only presume that this is Mr Cartright? You need to remember where you come from, and need to remember that it was this place that made you.
Who the he-l are people referring too in the maker?
I don’t understand the bitterness and hatred that’s been written on here. People lose jobs everyday, more importantly we seen many angency staff lose their jobs for nothing, and yet no one batted an eyelid. So here we are today, moaning just because it’s your job on the line. Let’s not for one second blame Brett for the whole closure of the site! That’s ridiculous! Yes we have lost some very good operators and maintenance workers over the last 10 years, and yes it’s put a negative effect on the running of the business, but the truth is, 3M can probably make these products elsewhere for a lot less. For us, there’s plenty of jobs out there at the moment. Just having a look now there’s greencore, Royal Mail and towbar trust all in Atherstone, and a number of jobs at Birch Coppice all available. We can solder on and get 6-2 elsewhere:) let’s stick together and see it to the end, in the meantime let’s think about what we can do afterwards- gardening, warehouse, factory work or even going to college to learn something new. Sandpaper may be interesting, but the worlds a big place.
Everyone has their own opinion as to what went wrong and who is to blame.
The plant has suffered for over a decade, with low volume, high waste etc. Then add Brexit into the mix, being an Island and deciding to cut ties with a huge market next door, was in my opinion , ludicrous.
Anyone that has worked for 3M, either recently or over 40 years ago, is now in a better position for doing so. If they are not then it is through their personal choices.
I for one am sad to hear this news but it’s time to start thinking of the future and what next, whether that be retirement or be challenges.
Good luck to all
I don’t think Hilden would be on chopping block any time soon. Lot of IP and TS tied to this place, core product manufacturing and has seen $$ investment is CSD manufacturing. The place could see some fine tuning as with PSD exit, but not lights out.
does anyone thinks 3M HILDEN will end up the same fate of plant closure? recently TSD has announced its exit from Hilden pulling out 25% of its plant sales. will more divisions exit Hilden?
As the saying goes when you blame and criticise others, you are avoiding the truth about yourself! As a current employee of 3M and reading these comments it’s unfortunate that the minority who are usually the more vocal tarnish the company and plant that have given them the lifestyle they have. Have some dignity and respect!
Do you know what I know , certain people know ,I know it will come out and when it does we will all know . And people won’t forget what we all will know keep going there is a promise land you just need to know what I know 😂
You all need to grow up, acting like a bunch of children, it’s embarrassing
BF posting below clearly
You do know BF had nothing to do with maintenance patterns or pay.
Atherstone are definitely going down fighting, amongst themselves!!!
Come on guys let’s have more, this is comic Gold.
If anyone higher up actually reads this stuff then I bet they wished they’d closed you earlier
Difference is in 12 months I have a job and you're down the job centre
From what I saw, the maintenance lads didn’t threaten anything. They simply asked to not get shafted with a near 10K paycut and a lousy shift pattern.
Management did it anyways and then looked surprised when skilled blokes left for more money and better shifts elsewhere.
Hardly holding the plant to ransom or threatening when they were essentially kicked out the door.
"I'm maintenance and I left for a better job" but still feels the Need to comment on a 3m forum about something that has happened since you left. So no you don't know toffee, trust past time lemons to bu-t in and think they know what's happening when they haven't been in the plant recently.
I'm maintenance and I left for a better job, I did the shift patterns that production demanded and spent the majority of time running an entire plant on my own therefore the senior maintenance lads didn't threaten Brett Ford, that's a fact. If Brett Ford said that he is a liar. Trust uneducated lemons to make up things and call it fact.
Why has no one mentioned the product development centre. Those guys driving about in their BMW company cars and getting paid a fortune for doing nothing. Most of them 'working from home'!!!!!! The new product we sacrificed everything for is a complete flop leaving us with no volume. Complete disaster. Will they still keep their jobs while we need to look elsewhere?
The senior maintenance lads threatened Brett Ford that they would leave if they got put on a shift pattern. That is a FACT
