Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Is it time to leave tech?

Currently, many, if not all, major tech companies are experiencing layoffs and enforcing return to the office. To add to that, automation is becoming increasingly prevalent, and with the integration of AI rapidly approaching, I don't see many options available for us in the future.

The tech industry is largely complete BS. Innovation is often for its own sake. Sure we need tech and IT but much of it is innovation to create a “want” rather than a need. Much of the tech from many years ago is completely viable but it is deliberately EoS to drive sales.

We couldn't even roll out a Saleforce update!

I hardly think VMware is going to automate AI or jobs away. They certainly want to, but VMware is big on talk and small on execution.

The reality is that the tech industry is one of the least stable and you are lucky to get 5 years at any given company. If that's not for you then its probably not the industry for you.

I have had this discussion many times with those I mentor.

The short answer: You're wrong. Tech is too wide of an industry. There are too many sub industries. We all know tech is a changing field. This isn't a field you enter and stay in the same job for the rest of your life.

I'm on the cybersecurity side, under SBU. Even we have too many sub-industries. In my 15 years, I've held 4 wholly different careers in the same industry. And two other careers in general tech before then. Generalized work will be automated and phased out. Just as was with COBOL and Pascal. Instead of 1,000,000 people doing it, we need just 1/10th of that.

Find the next big thing to invest in. Realistic things, like AI, and not blockchain. Keep adjusting your work so that it aligns better with the next job you're going for. I have people on my team sick of the work and want to do something else. I signed them up for Take1 classes for a whole new skill set. That way in a year or two they can easily quit my team and go to another.
