Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Not totally sure if this tactic still works, but I used it once in personal circumstances that made it possible. If the state is fine with it and allows this, it's hard to say it's "wrong", IMO:

• Massachusetts had (and just checked, still might) the best UI benefits in terms of weeks of support and max payment per week
• They also had "even better" benefits if you could show you were going back to school, taking training for a new job, etc.
• Unsure what the minimum requirement is these days...but maybe a Boston-area coding boot camp could count, and be remote
• If you are going to a training course, you didn't need to have an in-state address
• It is easy to use a mail forwarding service to get an address if needed, but that is more of a grey area

If you are going to be hit, it may be possible to login to your HCM/HR system and update your address or work location before your last paycheck. Fly Southwest or whatever you prefer to Springfield, MA, and apply in person. The people at the agency are there to help applicants get benefits. Just take the right steps and be honest about your intentions...starting over in MA, staying with family, getting training, etc.

I'm being laid off Sept 20th - or so they told me. Unrelated to the sales cuts. My beef is that Dell won't put the last day or severance in writing. They told me what severance has been lately, but can't put it in writing until a couple days beforehand.

This is where your reputation and training is worthwhile. All those courses you were made to do every quarter? they mean something here. You know stuff. All those customers that ask for you and only you to help them? Thats going to pay off.

If you've been an angry dead weight with no moral compass you will probably still also get a job as strangely enough people want to employ sociopaths at some companies.

Great post OP. Been through it all in February, it is not fun. Luckily landed at a better & higher paying job. USE YOUR NETWORK!! I had people calling on my behalf the day I got laid off, some of which I had never met. It will be tough for the first 1-2 months for sure, but you will end up in a better spot. Best of luck!

severance and unemployment can both be claimed depending on what state you are in. as for lump sum severance, i was not given the option of taking any other form of payment. lastly vacation is accrued, you will only receive vacation from the amount of unused vacation hours that have accrued YTD (this is not going to be what you have left on workday). MAKE sure you ask for payment of this, the whole system is not going to be great. Once you are let go asking for Dell people to ask questions will not be easy. the lady who was my HR rep on the call was literally fired a week ago.

Lump sum or monthly payout, which is better?

As far as severance/Unemployment goes: It's state-by-state. My state has a formula where most (but not all) of the severance had to run out before I could collect. Benefits will terminate midnight friday night (assuming you're kept on through Friday like the prior round). If you have any money left in your fitness account, use it up! There's plenty of things like fitbits or weights you can buy. Just make sure to put in the claim by Friday because you'll be cut off after that. Be prepared for many, many, many calls, emails, and texts from Fidelity trying to hawk their financial management business. That was super annoying. And use up your inspire points- even if just for gift cards. You're locked out of the site when you're terminated. Good luck.

I filed in Texas because it took about 4 weeks for the severance to hit my bank. Once i received it, I reported the income to TWC and was told I couldn’t receive further payment until my severance ran out. I appealed the decision since payment was dependent upon signing a document not to sue them. Decision from TWC is pending.

It depends how the severance is packaged. If you are kept on payroll you can’t file. If you are given lump sum payment you can.

Can you apply for Unemployment if you accept the severance deal though? I thought you had to wait until severance runs out before applying. #texas

Inaccurate post. You are all going and will never work again. Take solace that you once were employed by DELL.It will comfort you when the sh!t hits the fan.

If someone just worked for a year, what will be severance like? Will it be base and commission? What happens to the benefits are they immediatley stopped with a layoff? Will unused vacation be paid?

When we’re you laid off and what was your package? What country?

I can only speak to what I’ve heard and Commercial sales is going to get hit hard, all overlays and channel sales are also in crossfire. Can’t speak to any non sales roles

For the ones who got org update email, can you please inform which Org is impacted?

I’ve been at Dell for almost 9 years, this hurts but I’m trying to be positive. What really hurts is the amount of multimillion dollar deals I have lined up to close this next Q, I feel used and it su-ks. I wish they would’ve at least gave me some lipstick so I could look nice and pretty before they fu---d me.

This is a really good post, thank you. It isnt personal, it's business and being laid off is part of normal business. Take advantage of the break, take some time for yourself then get back into the game.

You worked for one of the worlds most well known companies and that is awesome on a resume.

Be good to yourself and fall back on the good you brought others. A new life and job is around the corner and you will probably end up at Dell 3.0 again in a few years.

it is cold, and you will be overcome with emotions. If you are part of the people let go this upcoming Monday, stay strong, take a week break or more, and when you are ready hit the ground running for a new job. It may not seem like it but the sooner you look the better. While you are used to a working schedule use it to your advantage and more importantly use the timing to your advantage, easier to get a job when you were just freshly out of one! Time will fly before you know it, stay strong, being laid off feels just like a break up...but like a break up you will come out stronger
