These layoffs are not going to stop anytime soon. Next year there will be more layoffs and the country is slowing down in the election year.

General Example of a Severance Plan:

For hourly employees:
# of years with company X 1 week of regular pay = Severance pay total
If you typically make $1,000 per week and have worked at your company for 10 years, your severance pay would be $10,000 (10 years X $1,000 = $10,000)

For salaried employees:
# of years with company X 2 weeks of regular pay = Severance pay total
If your salary is $100,000 per year, that is $4,000 for two weeks (given the cap is 25 weeks). If you have been at the company for 10 years, your severance pay would be $40,000 ($4,000 X 10 years).

"People to be laid off were picked by a consultant firm, managers and directors were not involved."

That is the Hollywood movies. People were selected by their immediate supervisors. Supervisors (Managers/Directors and reports the list to the VP/EVPs) Sit in a panel and decide pros/cons of getting rid of a person and its effects for the immediate work loss and work around, then they make the elimination decision. They have to maintain a certain compendium based on the budget they get from the upper leadership.

I do believe our supervisor along with his boss made the decision if my department is laying off. I don’t believe it when they say they know nothing

“ No they are all in it and lying to save their faces. They did the selections and decided to eliminate the ones they do not like or felt they could not control. These are all liars and cheaters. Karma will come to them walk them through the same road they sent you.

Don't feel bad. There are lot of jobs out there. Find a job and move on.”

Not true for my org. No one knows a thing. Maybe we’re all getting sh-t canned

@Debbrah - if you don’t mind me asking, how many weeks of severance did you get? Was it based on years of employment and job level, like others have suggested?

Trying to be prepared for all outcomes here, and the severance amount will likely decide how stressful the next few months might be (should something happen)

It depends on area. I am aware of Lead Directors being involved with ED’s and VP’s finalizing lists but this hasn’t been consistent across organizations. Obviously those who are on lists themselves haven’t been involved. Some senior managers may be in the know but not a lot.

I was laid off with severance and benefits until 08/31. In my exit interview, my manager said some specific words only she and I knew. This indicates it was she who decided to let me go nobody else or done differently as stated in many other posts. My elimination decision was taken by my manager.

My senior director (my direct supervisor)
has been through several lay offs with Aetna. She said this one has been approached very differently in that “leadership” was not notified in advance and was not asked to participate in making decisions.

They don't go by that because some people were out on PTO and or FML.

5000 layoffs is not starting this week. It has been happening since at least the beginning of June-July 2023 and its on going. Many VP's, directors, managers, strategists, analysts, consultants have been already laid off. Blood bath is on-going.

They pick people based on the performance. Company has bought a software to identify performance based work. It captures who is working, who is on internet, keystrokes, how often the keys being pushed, what rate, how many words written per hour, images on the screen, numbers/digits, clicks per minute, captures messaging, who is gossiping, etc., etc. This was mentioned in the CEO's email with bunch of mumbo jumbo words written by using ChatGPT like software. If you read between the lines few times you will see what its intended purpose.

They use consultant firms to make the list. that way no one in the company has to take the blame. The consultants use seniority and performance ratings to create the list.

Sorry - how is the list done, can you please explain any process/criteria? Is it just the employees you don’t like?

Its the Department/Division Head. if there is no such person its the direct supervisor picks the names. They pick the names, create the lists, send it to the the VP, then silently stay like nothing happened. Then few days later informs the employee that the "Company has decided to do an organizational restructuring and as a result moving forward with the new strategy your position has been eliminated...This decision affects the non customer facing colleagues and you are one of the impacted colleagues...blah blah blah"

I am a social worker on the Aetna side of things and when they restructured us a few months back, the layoffs and reassignments were at random and without my direct manager’s knowledge.
