Thread regarding VMware layoffs

About Broadcom internal levels

Assuming we will not be fired and we will not leave, and assuming nobody really knows until the deal is completed but I would like some opinions from you about the conversion of levels we can expect to have.
Speculation is funny sometimes.
I'm speaking just about engineers (R&D and maybe solution engineers).

VMware levels are from P2 to P6 (I'll exclude P1 as I have never seen someone with that level, also P2 are really very rare, and above P6 as there are very few)

Broadcom levels seems to be very similar from ICB2 to ICB6.
Do you think we can expect a linear conversion? P2 -> ICB2, P3->ICB3 ecc ecc.... Similar to what is written to levels.fyi?
https://www.levels.fyi/?compare=Broadcom,VMware&track=Software%20Engineer#

For what I see in VMware most people are P4 (Senior member of technical staff). This level seems to include people from 4+ years to 15/20+years of experience. I see very few P2 and P3, and a good amount of Staff and very few P6/P7.

As VMware will be the name of the next Broadcom software division, maybe they will just keep levels and salaries as they are? I mean.... I suppose that the integration for 30K+ people (ok far less in case of mass layoff) will not just happen in 2 days so likely at the starting organizzations will still operate differently including levels (probably same thing happened also in DELL/EMC after acquisition)

The id--tic thing is that some of the existing first and second line managers' work agains individual contributors. This is the only way for them to be relevant and get job offers from BCOM.

How does that work? It's two completely different roles.

Everything I’ve heard says they under title and over pay.

What I heard is they have a much flatter hierarchy and not necessarily the same titles. And, multiple times, that they pay much better than VMW and give out more RSUs.

Sadly, when my company was acquired by VMware everyone had their positions reduced in rank. No discussion, no debate. People 5 years into the job suddenly became P1s...

I went into the final year at my old company with a plan, and a few projects, to rubber stamp the P4>P5 promotion. Budgets froze to prepare for acquisition then suddenly I'm bumped down to a P3 instead. Assimilation, lots of turnover, and then scratching the way back to a P4. Though I loved being a P3 hopping on email threads and calls with VPs and Sr Dir's requesting budgets and clearances for projects I ran. There was more than one conversation b/w someone and my boss about how our team should have higher-ranked people running major projects haha

It is wiser to assume that 80% of us will be fired over the next several years. I hate to think about it but necessary to avoid disappointment. Be prepared and all the very best

I can’t imagine them not knocking everyone one a level or even two. I don’t expect to last long at Broadcom, so don’t really care.

Is Broadcom giving RSU also outside the US? I know for sure that in the EU not everyone get VMW RSU on hiring!

I’m expecting they map us all 1 down for staff and below and everything above staff is mapped to principal

senior staff, pe —-> principal (icb5)
Staff2 and staff 1 (p5 VMware) —-> staff (icb4) at broadcom
Senior (p4) —-> senior (icb3)
P3—> icb2
P2 & p1 —> icb1

For managers
Senior manager to manager
Manager to super visor
Director to senior manager
Senior director to director

Base salary will be the same and we will get RSUs based on the above levels is my prediction

Will levels matter much after BC right-sized the org and layers of people are removed?

The real linear conversion that will matter - still employed vs unemployed.

Grads are P1
Associates P2
Normal P3
Senior P4
Lead or Staff or Strategic P5
Senior Staff or Strategic or senior strategic P6

Yes I’ve seen strategic used differently depending on job role.

Seen plenty of SEs, TAMs, CSM at P3!

We were acquired by VMW, they kindly moved us all a step down on the ladder when we came across, so do not think there will be parity or any favors from BCOM, more than likely a downgrade on role/level, saves salary/bens/bonus/stock

I am a P3! I see plenty of P3s in EUC.
