Negotiating Severance

I was laid off today and offered severance. Has anyone successfully negotiated severance with UHC?

There's nothing your direct manager of even Director can do. All of this, is dictated to them by the company, and there's no exceptions. But, all the responsibility is placed on you direct leader and that's on purpose. If you come back and sue the company Optum has a scapegoat in your direct leader, Optum is fully protected. Unless there's some kind of group action individuals will get nothing, Optum will protect itself, your leader will be fired as a peace offering and the Government will be satisfied. You end up with nothing. I've seen it happen more than once at Optum.

Severance is clearly outlined in Sparq so I highly suggest you send yourself a copy of that like I did. It’s dependent on your time with the company and your grade level. Also, they don’t give severance for partial years. They round down. Max PTO payout is 40 hours on top of severance.

They played hard ball with me, listened and acted like they would consider and then came back with take it or leave it! So I felt like I was being fired instead of being given a minimal, cheapskate, severance. Remember they have spyware on all company laptops and if you are not sitting there working every minute of core hours, they can make you look like a bad employee. My job didn’t require that kind of schedule but my managers, being the mostly useless slugs they were, would be able to make me not look like a rockstar and undermine any legal recourse, I chose to walk away!

Severance is a pay policy, it is on Sparq and has always been for everyone to see, know and reference. Policies aren't negotiable. There is a chart to figure out for what grade level and number of years complete with the organization you will end up with XX number of weeks base pay to a max of 26 (6 months). You will get a lump sum of up to 40 hours of PTO.

No shot.....if your grade allows for severance it is what they say it is. The most is 26 weeks but you have to be there for over 18 years for that. Most are set at 10 weeks and move up according to your time at the company.

For Optum they have a severance policy, maybe look to see if there is a UHC one. It’s non negotiable from my understanding.
