Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Why do you stay?

I love it when people, especially on here, ask why people stay at 3M. If I may, I will quote Spaceballs (with some minor changes):

...And they've already got me in their magnetic beam. We're too late. What a shame. I'll just throw her in reverse. We'll get out of here.

No! Bad.

What are we doing risking our lives for 3M? I know we need the money, but...

Listen, we're not just doing this for money. We're doing it for a s**tload of money.

You're right. And when you're right, you're right. And you, you're always right.

And before you comment, there is more to life than money... nah. I am pretty much motivated by money. Most people are, whether they want to admit it or not... which is why they work at a cr-p job for a lot of money. I would rather be on a beach sipping mai thais than working here... but here I am. C'est la vie.

I have a relatively easy job and my boss rarely pushes me as long as I provide him the weekly updates. Incidentally my boss have taken another role, and no replacement identified yet. I am enjoying every bit of my job now. Doing nothing and get paid.

If you can work from home and coast why leave? Obviously if a better opportunity comes your way I would take it but most people left are either waiting for retirement or a better job.

No wonder quarterly earnings so sh**.

WYW is what is keeping talented people still working at 3M. If I have meetings from 7:00-7:00 I am happier to do that from home and more willing to collaborate globally. If I have were forced to come back to the office (the now outdated way of working) I would quit.

Please don't remove WyW. Otherwise, I might have to look for another job

Heard of regional colleagues on permanent WFH. Usually they have 3~4 calls per day. After that, it is their free time. Such a good deal for them.

I hope they keep WYW. As i really enjoyed using this privilige, and allows me to live a pre-retirement lifestyle while getting full pay.

Because I’m 65 years old, need the money and no other company would look at me. Age discrimination is real.

I stay to keep my lifestyle honestly. And Work Your Way flexibility is pretty great; no commute has given me hours back on the daily to spend with friends and family. I put in solid effort, am acknowledged for my effort by my managers and team, have personal life to enjoy in the evenings, and can afford to buy fancy coffee and wine. No serious complaints at the moment. I feel for those that don’t have a decent boss or environment; I know it’s not this good most places in the company.

Log in at 9am. Attend 3 meaningless meetings. Log off. Cash my 17 k monthly check. That is why I stay

I want 3-5 years of work to retirement. I don't want to look for job and start over for a short period of time. It is humiliating experience till i reach my number. I did what i could for this company. Over $165M sales created by my technology with no funding but just using existing mfg. lines. I find this is not good for Manager's power point slides. God help 3M!

Frankly I find the wfh system is good and I still get full salary. I can do my household chores and this is quite good for me. I am staying.

I stay for the bagels and donuts. I don't need money.

I am in early 50s and I am staying because the money is good for the relatively easy job ( my grade is rather low so the stress are on the VPs or Directors). Hope to get the severance package too.

To E. Jean Carroll Admirer:

The shortest verse in the Bible is John 11:35.
“Jesus wept.”

In the early 1990's, I was working in the London Ontario Canada sand paper plant.
While winding film on a Saturday morning (pilot runs were done on weekends), and operator accidentally fell into the winder and got wrapped up. tension on the roll was from the middle to the edges. He had to be cut out with blow torch and did not survive.
Desi and his entourage were at the site within hours. I was so proud of 3M. Several months later, 3M said the operator was going through a bad divorced and committted s u i c i d e. He got nothing in court

This one time I hit up a chick on tinder but when she saw I worked at 3m she refused to go on a date because her dad died of cancer working at plant with chemicals and 3m did nothing for their family. That should have been my first red flag to quit.

I’ve only stayed for the money. All of my best coworkers quit, retired or were laid off in 2020.

I made more money at my last job. I switched for the work environment and mix of coworkers. Unfortunately a lot of environment perks were falsehoods. None of the workers have any pride or care to care about following rules or doing good work. We're just present in a chaotic environment of daily venting. I would thank them if they fired me and only be sad about the social interaction of friends. Money greed is what makes 3m a shithole. The only thing money should be used for is getting people to do jobs that struggle to be withheld or filled. You probably should be removed, if you're getting paid a lot of money to do nothing.

“And all your money won't another minute buy…”

Meanwhile taking money from a morally bankrupt institution will require giving an account. Inescapable. Undeniable.
