The stated goal is to become "IPO-ready" (which also readies the company for sale to any private buyer). To achieve that goal, you'd want to be able to say "We've always been profitable."

Also, any layoff inspires some to "jump ship", like the previous poster did. SAS management knows if they lay off 1%, they'll lose another X% by attrition.

SAS may not need a big layoff to insure profitability. The total leaving, in small layoffs and by attrition, may be sufficient.

Hard to believe that 120 is the real number. A lot more than that need to get the Axe to positively affect revenue/head.

I absolutely agree that one big layoff would be better. I jumped ship because of the weird secrecy around layoffs in my division and the inability for upper management to give me a convincing pitch that this was the last one in our group for the foreseeable future.

continual small cuts that are never officially announced internally even. it feels secretive.

"SAS spokesperson Shannon Heath told The News & Observer the company has been 'shifting some divisional structures to better align with our corporate priorities.' She said around 1% of the company’s total workforce is expected to be impacted this year."

That would be around 120 people who get "shifted". Or shafted.

“Right now, everybody’s panicked,” said the employee. "People think it’s not the last. They’re waiting for the next shoe to drop.”

Morale might be impacted less by one big layoff, rather than continual small cuts.
