Thread regarding 3M layoffs

New hiring

Funny seeing all the happy posts of new hires and adds to the company. I thought we were reducing staff. Can you say "let's replace the JG 14 - 16s with 11 - 12s?" That's how much integrity 3M has now. That's why they don't bother saying "3M Values" anymore.

Yes. This company is screwed. Sell all your GESPP while the shares is above $100. It won't stay in 3 digits for long.

So my experience with lay offs has been a bit different being on the younger side (>5 years). My entire Optimized Operations class wiped out (at least all the T2 and T3 that still stayed). When my team got cut, only people with pension plan weren't let go. I was absolutely baffled when almost all younger folks i worked with (including myself were let go). How the he-l is 3M going to pass down all that technical knowledge? Most exerpinced folks i worked are 1-3 years away from retirement. This company is screwed.

This is exactly what they did to the recruiting org last fall. Laid off the expertise and hired in super junior level individuals.

I agree with the post below about the rampant ageism at 3M on full display during the last purge. But once the release is signed (a prerequisite to getting the severance) there is no legal recourse. Another “ethical “ cost saving move? Probably.

This move going to backfire big time. Do you think young guys going to drive this company into prosperity?. They are here to get experience. One they got that they will jump to next company. 3M will be always hiring in future instead of growing

Sounds like it might be easy to show that a policy was implemented that impacted/targeted older workers. Example: Sacrifice thousands knowing you are getting at mix of older employees, then hiring young employees thereafter.

New hires won't rise to the occasion - they will default to their level of training.

Welcome to the real world. Ageism is real. Why would you pay one old expensive worker (with tons of useful knowledge) when you can hire three brand new young employees?

Actually, I think Fast Company put them on the Sustainability list, which is even more hilarious...

It’s sickening. An ethical company? BS. And Fast Company wants to award them for innovation? Maybe on how many innovative ways you can sc--w the employees through layoffs, false promises, no promotions… gross.

Many people I know are waiting to dump their GESPP right before spin-off

Well said. The current situation is unprecedented and unsustainable. 3M cannot cut itself to prosperity. The primary way out of this mess is to grow.

More like replacing with JG 7-8. JG 10-13 got laid off too, just earlier in rounds to try and preserve the 14-15's.

Being told 'your skills don't match where 3M is going" only to have an intern replace you. Says a lot about the 'skills' needed going FORWARD.

SpinCo Sites seeing the opposite. Laying off good performers to reduce staff after starving ourselves the last 2 years following that layoff. Waiting for Q2 results to most likely layoff again. Living in a SpinCo plant is great. It’s like you get a promotion every layoff but you don’t get a pay raise. Some of us are not qualified to be doing the duties we are being asked to do as the layers of leadership are merging due to layoffs. We have no idea how we are going to spin off with the obstacles and hurdles we see between now and the new year. Soft spin planned with increasing back order. Everyone becoming a Jack of all trades but an expert of none. Ba--s are getting dropped right and left due to everyone expecting everyone else are completing it. Deadlines getting missed and projects getting pushed back or cancelled. Hourly production seeing the lack of awareness or vision because leadership doesn’t have it. Most dysfunction I’ve seen in all of my years with 3M. Morale is at an all time worse and operators are leaving weekly. 3M is hoping that the few that are still fighting pull the nose up before the crash. I come in daily trying but losing steam.
