For the leaders in jg 17 and up, what would you say are their attributes? And 2) What evidence of accomplishments do they have?

Speak intelligently without being actually intelligent
Brown nose, and do it some more.
Don’t be super at something else you’re stuck, instead be just good enough to look great at the right time
Brown nose another dozen times before lunch
Have an executive sponsor who will cover your mistakes and poor leadership skills, and have this person promote you away from production that you repeatedly meddle with

Here is the interesting thing about being a upper management guy in 3M. You can get promoted for anything you do, provided you know the right people.

Start a new organization...promotion, can it after a few short years ....promotion, change the name of a division... promotion, merge 2 divisions ....promotion.

Now has any of our current executives ever grown a business organically to get promoted.....come on...don't ask me the taboo questions...we all know the answers !

RE: india started getting notified last friday.

Wasn't there recently a huge new technology center (or something along those lines) built in India? The company didn't pour millions into a new facility only to close it down and cut the staff, right?

Well the current top hocho in charge of TEBG was sent to India to set up the India lab and build a R&D center going back a decade and a half ago. Thought was that 3M needs to grow all over the world and doing R&D in Maplewood and a few other places won't cut it anymore.

He did just that and being one of Inge 's close circle rose to the top fairly fast ! When the same person was the CTO of the company few years later after doing a 4,5 year stint in India, he shut down the R&D center in India, saying it was too small to be impactful.

Soon after this decision, he got promoted again !

As long as they don’t start with their long years (yawn!!) with 3m as their introduction I’ll listen to them. Also, if ur a few years in like misogynist mo and still say u ppl, im tuning out.

It's not what you know, it's who you know in 3M that's important in order to rise thru the ranks

Varys - Thank you! I was unaware others have been gaslighted by senior leadership. I, too, was told I do not have a growth mindset by a senior leader. I was gaslighted in other ways as well. I am sad gaslighting is common at 3M. There is only so much gaslighting anyone can take. It is important people know gaslighting is common at 3M. I found out the hard way.

"Yes, If"

Wow, that is triggering because it became so widespread. I've told a couple SVPs and a few finance directors to their face "Yes, if you write the check to pay for it" - they were not amused. Amazingly they never used the line on me again.

Also on my hits list is:

  • The power of "and" (as in the power to do more AND have less staff AND spend less)
  • Everyone's favorite gaslighting: "Growth mindset" - No, 3M leadership isn't bad. If you don't agree with leadership we will not-so-subtly hint that you are mentally flawed.

(1) YES man/woman
(2) to get those below them to say YES

I once had a director (under old rank scheme). He always told his people not to say NO, but say YES IF.
