It looks like it is impossible for WDC to purchase Kioxia. Now everybody knows WD paid 19 billion only for the contract of feasibility to purchase chips from Toshiba, and it will be at least 1900 Billion for the full purchase to WDC.
It'll be awhile before HDD's are replaced. SSD's will need to figure out how to dissipate heat in a 300 layer part and going beyond 3 nm will be costly.
WD screwd up with their SanDisk purchase. It was way overpriced for their particular blend of cr-p. SanDisk was pretty much just a final packager receiving chips via their partnership with Toshiba and purchasing from other vendors. Unfortunately, that strategy blew up with Steve Milligan. They used HDD revenue to float the company while investing everything in SSD.
But hey, maybe they can acquire Kioxia too and really tap that debt. Maybe even use equity from stocks to purchase. I'm sure the investors would love that.
wow, HDD revenue is down to 1.5B. It seems that there is no improvement in flash business (1.2B) which is still similar revenue as SNDK. It looks like the SNDK flash business model is in trouble since there is no way to scale up the revenue in these years in which HDD should be replaced by SSD tide.
no surprises here....
