Thread regarding Northwestern Mutual layoffs

Purposeful Presence Hopes are Dashed

For those that missed The Weekend this morning, our hopes of our new CTO being able to secure flexible working arrangements for ESD were brought down. DG only wanted people to be on-site if there were benefits to doing so, otherwise he preferred people could work from anywhere and only come in for days like town halls.

While both working remotely, CM and JS (CM in his car and inviting people in Atlanta for lunch), started to discuss their feelings on the importance of in-person work and that the company leadership (including JES) feels in-person is best for a team atmosphere. I would repeat more of it here, but it's the same bologna we have heard before starting to be spewed again. My impression is that DG's ideas went to the SLT and were shot down pretty quickly. DG was not on the call to answer questions.

Memorable Quote from This Morning: Locate for your day benefits the individual, not the team.

The company is paying NYC employees a 15% premium over the posted Milwaukee salaries which is bankrupting the Technology department and the company. There isn't a single NYC employee worth keeping and former LearnVest employees should be terminated along with the NYC office being shutdown permanently. Only a fool would have invested in or bought that Mickey Mouse startup. Several members of SLT have attempted to distance themselves from that blunder. The most pathetic thing is that no one has been held accountable for that f-up.

@vpa+1muB6E9k That's exactly it, someone posted on Slack "So when are we closing the New York office so we can all collaborate effectively in one location?"

The entire SLT group is to blame for this. The company is the most polarized, divided, and toxic it has ever been. Most can be attributed to JES, but DR and his HR team are a close second. Their failed DEI policy has destroyed the culture and the return to campus is merely the latest. If working together was so important, the NYC office would be put up for sale tomorrow. That cesspool has done nothing but drain the core values right out of NM.

the real problem is all of the id--ts that keep asking these questions. locate for our day, get your job done, and no one will care. but when they keep making the executives speak to it or demanding clarifications they are just begging for hard and fast rules and monitoring to be put in place.
