Thread regarding Amazon.com layoffs

The way it was done is awful

No one deserves to be told in such an ugly way that there is no place for them here. I mean, people with enormous knowledge and talent who were dedicated to the company for years were cut totally inhumanely. A bitter taste will remain after such a treatment!

The myth of cloud is going to be dead soon in enterprises. DN or BIC are already dead with PS restricting in country.

Do you or have you worked for aws or are you just jumping at the chance scouring the boards to pound at your podium?

I worked for a blue chip for 20 years before coming to aws. I came to aws because I was laid off from a blue chip company. My layoff there was a ramp up warning profits were down and the managers were meeting to decide on who gets cut a few weeks before the cuts. Then my manager called at 7:30am to let me know I was cut. At aws? I was 3 states away doing a customer presentation when my laptop went to the locked screen in front of the customer. You cannot tell me I should expect this working for any decent company large or small. If this is the kind of treatment you anticipate and prepare for on the daily, I don't want to live your life.

No company other than maybe a very small private business is going to do this in person and the way you're asking. Too much chance of an incident, and the person/persons who ultimately make the decision was likely not your direct boss.

You are responsible for you, and keeping your emotions in check. It sucks, but it could also be a great opportunity. I wouldn't be where I was had I not been shown the door from a pretty decent job (pay wise, but terrible culture wise) 18 years ago. Best advice I ever had from a boss was "always be prepared to hand over your laptop, grab your backpack and walk out the door in 5 minutes." If you view your work impersonally, and as something you simply do for money and one job is really as good as the next, just with different hassles and niceties, you'll be better off. Trust me on that one.

I'm nearing my 50s, which is the most dangerous time for a white male in the modern workplace. I'm absolutely prepared for the axe to fall at any time, and have set up my finances accordingly. You should too.

They kicked 9,000 out of the house and changed the locks. Left them to figure it out once they checked their personal emails. Left them to face humiliation in front of customers as they wondered why they were locked out of their laptops mid presentations. Most of those 9,000 forwent vacations and family time to work in the name of the LP's the company doesn't even follow. Pure garbage.

Hey, I agree I met Applied Scientists with PhD, a ton of data scientists with ML/AI experience. They were dropped like flies. TPMs L6, L5 and even a L7 smoked.

How come?

I believe bigtech is making a calculation that AI tools will increase productivity to a point that even if high tech employees get upset and reject work, they will find a supply of engineers and leverage Ai tools to augment them.

Regarding what you said about the abrupt termination, I did an article explaining that in mass layoffs, therr is a percentage of employees who get disgruntled and resort to sabotage if they are allowed to remain in the system. So it is a practice to cut off the access immediately upon dismissal.

Good luck to us all.

Palo Alto Networks did the same. No forewarning. Slit the throats of the most brilliant minds.

L10s. Prove you feel our pain. Acknowledge your failings in over hiring. Show some true penitence and integrity.

Or will you keep your cowardly silence while the rest of us suffer for your failings?
