They lie to us because for them we are just a number. If they say there will be no more layoffs, they cannot be trusted. But what's the purpose of lying? It just demotivates employees even more.

The leadership thinks we're d-mb ("there will be no layoffs at Appian"), they don't know what they're doing, or both. I bet the truth is somewhere in the middle.
My thought on this is that the “numbers” about performance were massaged as long as they could by the Cronies. Then sales performance tanked leaving nowhere to hide and costs had to be slashed quickly. Unless figures improve, expect more announcements.
Don’t trust corporations. Appian is no different.
I can't believe over the summer (2022) they said we wouldn't be impacted by the recession and would still be hiring like crazy. Unbelievable.
