Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Mike Vale will not be next CEO

While the leadership changes announcement make it sound like Mike Vale is being positioned to take over the reigns after Mike Roman is asked to retire, I believe the BoD will choose an external leader to run the company. The last two 3M-lifers-turned-CEO, Roman and Thulin, have been utter disasters. Buckley (hired from Brunswick), on the other had, actually grew the company (easy to look up 3M revenue during Buckley's tenure from 2005-2011).

3M needs new leadership, and the same old 3M way of thinking needs to change.

Making Sense,

I agree with you the next CEO should not be Vale and should be an external hire. I just don't think it will happen.

The board approves L1 appointments. Roman didn't promote Vale or move 3 BGs below him without their explicit approval.

This follows the trend - appoint the next internal CEO as a 'COO' for a while then transition smoothly. This happened for both Roman and Inge.

I would say this even puts Roman on a relatively short timer. He is almost certainly gone before the 2024 shareholder meeting and likely by the end of 2023.
