I have been at VMware for a year and am ready to move on. Long story short, it's been a cluster since joining. Would being at a company for only a year make me look like a job hopper?

Not in 2023. Just be prepared to answer questions about it in interviews, and provide honest answers. So many people have changed jobs in the last few years either of their own accord or due to factors beyond their control that it's pretty common.
I was with VMware 5 years ... Why did I not leave earlier ? Because similar jobs didn't pay as well and I was greedy. And I bet that is why so many people are moaning about VMware right now as a lot of people likely know they are overpaid.
In the UK - check LinkedIn jobs - VMware Architects in London earn half of what P4s or P5s earn in VMware PS.
You made it to a year? Congrats!
After my first five months, I nearly resigned. That's how bad it was. Stupid role, terrible management chain, ridiculous situation.
Decided to hang on, and make them pay me to quit.
At the eight-month mark, I got my wish.
Never been happier.
Or just get a second job and keep this one. They will never know.
The reply below is classic. Brilliant. If this site wasn’t so cr-p and built in the 21st century I’d do a crying smile tag. :/))))
Just bring a picture of Mr. Magoo to the interview and when asked why you left, take it out and point at it.
any org would get why you'd want to make a move. just do it.
You do what’s right for you. New employees will ask and honesty is best policy. They would see you move as someone who is committed to finding right job and best company.
No - take care of you. Companies won’t and leadership won’t.
Not at all unless you are doing it too frequently. At current market, that is totally acceptable especially at current market situation. Also, companies shouldn't be too concerning about job hopping. There is no requirements for loyalty between the company or the employees. Both sides are free to layoff employees or resign. It is just business and both sides look for their own. Employees getting layoff, C level getting great bonuses and salary hike. So look after yourself. If you get better pay and more secure position, that is no brainer. People should hop more to gain more experience and higher salary.
No. you might get asked for your reasons for leaving so quickly at interview, so be prepared, but this would not typically be a factor i would use on making a hiring decision.
