There is a real kernel of truth in this. BBBY Coupons were like Wards flyers back in the day. They connoted how hard up the companies were for your buck. Wards would bombard you with this cr-p after giving you easy credit. Later when people didn't pay up, they tanked.
People don't grok how hard up Wards looked. Same thing was pointed out in this sketch for BBBY. It always seemed to be on the brink of bankruptcy because of the number of coupons.
I bought three can openers at 53 and they said they no longer accept that coupon!
