The UI at Facebook was horrific

FB has UX designers and that's why it looks the way it looks. Same is true for Chrome, Firefox etc.
Were engineers creating the look and feel, it all would be way more usable.
FB had fed employees and was working with the feds?
Yes, but unfortunately, UX Design has become a rubber stamp at large companies like Meta. Google has horrific UX too, and I am sure you have seen plenty of examples at Microsoft and even Apple these days.
Legal and marketing run the show and UX is at the bottom of the totem pole. Many companies that are failing (e.g., HP) don't have the monopoly of the big players, so they do suffer when UX has to follow the lead of marketing and legal.
That is exactly why Metaverse is failing--horrific UX without the monopoly. And I am sure you can see that Mark runs the UX.
That was the brilliant thing about Steve Jobs--he would totally nail down the customer requirements and give UX the freedom to create it as best as they could. UX directly reported to Jobs under Ives, and Steve gave them all the power they needed.
