From what I am hearing, the poor leadership who came from outside of diagnostics, and their inability to both generate and combat the substantial loss of covid revenues, paired with declining sales and is forcing major cutbacks in IDS. BD has observed other companies such as Medtronic and J&J make substantial layoffs, and now has the cover to do the same without backlash. MMS made cuts, and now other businesses are doing the same, specifically IDS. Hopefully everyone impacted and quickly get back on their feet.

Was Shant Ananyan let go at Sumter?
IDS has some of the d-mbest leadership Ive seen in a long time in this company.
There have been layoffs at Sparks. Longtime employees mainly. Definitely expect more. Morale was already shaky but management has been signaling this for a while. Too bad they couldn't see that our COVID revenue wasn't going to last.
Rubber has always struggled with keeping fully staffed due to the heat and 12 hours in feet and it was Rubber Dept manager that was escorted out but now it's pretty much management across the board and out of the layoffs only 2 Quality from Rubber. There deeper issues throughout.
Hmmm. Okay. From my recollection, VMS, tubes and injection molding were running pretty well. Sets struggled with staffing - but seemed okay. It must have been to do with rubber as I know that department struggled with staffing and other issues.
It's a fact. Himself and a month later department manager was escorted off the property. Rumor, kickbacks and book cooking. But fairly reliable.
I had heard the story about folks from FLKS coming down and relieving him of his duties without any warning. I had a fair amount of interaction with him and thought that he was an honest, straight up plant manager who up to that point had done a relatively good job. I just can’t imagine that he had done something so egregious that it was warranted.
The Sumter plant manager was escorted from the the property by the CEO who flew down directly from Franklin with no explanation so something wasn't right.
The plant manager was escorted off the property by CEO who flew down from Headquarters maybe 6or 7 months ago and nothing else was revealed so something was going on.
That is strange. I used to work there and honestly thought the plant was on the right track compared to 2019 - we all knew the Covid revenue was just an anomaly - but I couldn’t believe the previous plant manager left Sumter so suddenly. Something must have went on behind the scenes.
Hope everyone affected turns out okay.
Yes, Sumter had layoffs Wednesday 11 people. Then their website is filled with jobs the next day and there's supposedly to be a hiring freeze. Makes no sense.
Tons of new jobs posted at BD Sumter. Was there a hiring freeze in place that was lifted? Doesn't seem to make sense with what is being written if layoffs are occuring.
MMS group is also dysfunctional with too many management layers and a matrixed structure that isn't working. Too many meetings for people to just get updates on progress so they can 'report' up to their management.
I agree. Ever since that new president from Medtronic came over, things at IDS have been declining. All of her hires have been poor so far. Our customers are pi---d and they keep on shutting down the programs that are low hanging fruit. IDS is a madhouse. R&D has their hands tied and has no leverage. I dont see things picking back up in the short term. It will get worse.
Had there been any layoffs at Franklin? Really poor management and it seems as if they've trimming fat of the workers when management needs to be totally restructured. These layoffs aren't going to affect the ones in management and that's where the problem begins...
Yes there will be more layoffs but everyone is laying off.
Will there be second round of layoffs in fall at BDx?
I was laid off today
Anything to report in Sumter, SC or Broken Bow, NE?
Confirmed, 4 of my coworkers were let go today :(
Just got wind of a couple of IDS layoffs today.
2 people I know tangentially, I assume they're not alone.
Can confirm. I was laid off. I’m an engineer.
Define substantial. High single digit percentages or higher than that?
Not surprising. Many people have been quietly tapped on the shoulder over the last two quarters in IDS, and other people have ran away in the IDS business. All they really have are needles and tubes supporting that business and covid revenues were really a fluke. They need executive leadership who really understand the diagnostic space, and leave those unicorn solutions alone. Have they even completed any quality acquisitions recently? Other companies are strategically acquiring. Life Sciences is pretty weak in that regard.
