Just thinking back at all the good people let go over those years as the company dealt with the outcome of the inept GOM exploration team at the time.

I don't think it was the exploration team's fault since this prospect was very similar to other prospects that BP had successfully drilled previously. The fault lies squarely with the drilling department. They were over time and budget on this project and took short cuts that caused the disaster.
I think that despite continuing to spend billions this was the last major discovery by bp in that basin. Also the only one of those batch of fields that ever produced.
