I am currently considering my options. I would prefer to volunteer to be laid off, but I am afraid of negative repercussions, how to approach it in general and whether this is a good time to tell manager about it. Any advice?

Best thing one can do for their career is pass this info around wide and far and publicly.
Let it be known to all. Start here, send email to ur mgr, your mgrs mgr and above. Even cc HR.
Only upside positive results.
I want to get laid off too. But unfortunately the volunteers are accounted for and if you ask now you are going to ruin your reputation at the company. Don’t say anything.
If you are really old then you shouldn't worry.
