I've seen a lot of inaccurate information so far so I thought I'd put together what I believe to be true.
First the 1% talking point: Yes 450 was the approximate number of layoffs out of a total company wide global workforce population of 45,000. This is quite misleading however. AB is a distribution company and therefore by nature has a significant blue collar work force. To my knowledge distribution was untouched by this event. This was strictly a corporate level white collar level layoff in the USA only. That puts the affected population of associates closer to 4,500 or 10% of the USA corporate workforce was let go. Everyone that I know of that was termed along with me was between the level of Manager and Senior Vice President.
Severance : AB has a documented generous severance policy that is accurately detailed in other posts here - It was adhered to and outgoing individuals were treated with respect. (This is from talking with several individuals that were my former co-workers.) With layoffs there are of course several unhappy people out there flaming AB atm - I don't blame them at all, I'm not happy either.
Who knew what and when and why?: This has all the makings of a bean counter, audit driven cleanup of the management layer within AB. Non revenue making and redundant managerial positions were eliminated under the guise of expense control. The notations that we held dear such as: Hard work, Dedication and Loyalty were not factors. Nor was your personal situation or attributes. This made me very sad. Before this week I thought I had worked for a company that valued their employees and to the most extent that is true. The people that I know and worked with are extraordinarily compassionate, caring and dedicated. At the end of the day we were servicing patients in need and that was our driving focus. These are not the people that made this decisions however. It was cold and very calculated and planned over the course of months by a soulless number crunching evaluation of the corporate structure post a global merger. Sadly, it was up to the members who survived to give out the news to the positions and friends that were let go and many were visibly upset by it.
