Thread regarding HP (Hewlett-Packard) layoffs

Anyone knows what's going on in San Diego?

As some of you may already know, las summer Apple bought the HP campus in Rancho Bernardo for 445 million (HP sold it in 2016 for 69 million). They make commercial inkjet there but a second line has been replicated in Singapore, certain to replace the one in San Diego in preparation for closing the US site.

I have a strong feeling that once the HP lease expires in 2023 and Apple moves in, they will layoff everyone in SD and move key people to Boise and Vancouver.

Anyone else knows anything about when the HP lease actually expires in 2023? HP management has been so hush hush about it.

When I was working at the Vancouver site, it was well known that much of 3D printing would move there (as the US base.) So I wouldn't be surprised if that is the path going forward. Corvallis could grown but Vancouver is just a nicer place to live overall.

But given HP's shrinkage year to year, it's hard to say how it will play out especially if printing and PC's split. At some point, HP will be small enough that having all these sites won't be financially viable. It would be of zero surprise if SD closed completely. Same for Palo Alto.

"The OP states he thinks that some Ssan Diego jobs might be moving from to Boise. WON'T HAPPEN! The Boise campus is steadily becoming 100% empty, there are absolutely no jobs that will be added in Boise. To believe otherwise is pure delusion."

HP will be breaking ground on a massive new campus in Vancouver, WA. It should be constructed in 3-4 years. Could it accommodate all the employees in other site closings in San Diego, Boise, etc., that we are leasing? Does anyone know what other sites we actually own (e.g., Corvallis)?

The Vancouver campus should be able to accommodate 6k employees, and it seems to be built with PWP and other needs in mind.

Any San Diego jobs will move overseas, leaving San Diego-based HP employees out of a job.

“At the Corvallis site here. There was a 3D layoff last year but it was mostly CW's. They have all been replaced now and the numbers are back up in the terms of head count. The PWP division is the only one really growing. My manager said he still needs about 20 more people”

I imagine is hard to hire in Corvallis, because no one wants to move to Corvallis, there. However, there are many politics in these decisions on which site has growth potential. Last year was also that life sciences would move out to Corvallis too. There were also layoffs in HP Labs and those doing life sciences

"Back in February Terry expressly stated during the Site Council FAQ that HP will remain on site until at least 2033."

Yes, and HP in Boise is still onsite. Drive by Chinden and you will hardly see any HP presence there. The State of Idaho occupies most of the old campus and HP barely occupies one building. They said the same things in Boise as Terry said about San Diego (we will stay onsite after the sale to appease the employees before the mass layoffs).

At the Corvallis site here. There was a 3D layoff last year but it was mostly CW's. They have all been replaced now and the numbers are back up in the terms of head count. The PWP division is the only one really growing. My manager said he still needs about 20 more people (engineers and techs). He does not hire CW's.

No sign of anything moving out of Corvallis. Nothing has moved to Spain. Spain has its own PWP division.

"3D team in San Diego was laid off this year, they were given a lot of notice. People who have left San Diego PWP have not been replaced and there has been a constant growth in Corvallis."

I hear from friends in Corvallis about layoffs in 3D division. A lot of 3D and wide-format printing has been moved to Spain by the way. Do you know any HP executives who are from Spain?

It seems Apple will kick HP out this year after their lease expires in San Diego. No way Apple will let HP renew the lease.

"The purchase of the office campus will likely help Apple achieve its expansion goals in San Diego. In April of 2021, the tech company announced a $430 billion commitment to expand across the United States over the next five years. As part of its investment, the company announced plans to grow its San Diego team by 5,000 employees by 2026. "

"The HP lease on the San Diego campus ends in Oct 2023 .... but the lease has 2 options attached to it. HP has the option to extend the lease for 5 years each. I don't know if the 5 year extensions are in tandem or at the same time. If in tandem, it would mean that HP will be in the San Diego campus for 10 more years. Apple would have to honor that or buy HP out of it."

Thanks, this is good information. I seriously doubt Apple paid 445 million for the HP campus to let HP stay there for 10 more years. Apple is leasing all over San Diego, and therefore needs a central hub for its employees.

Apple must have had some knowledge regarding HP options to extend the lease once it expires in October 2023, and realized they can legally wiggle out of it. Enrique is moving a lot of jobs to his native country so the lease may be a good excuse to shut down the site.

"HP sold the San Deigo property back in 2016, Apple purchased it in 2022. HP holds 79% leasing rights that the new owners cannot change until the lease runs out. Just use Google to find out all that stuff."

Those "leasing rights" you mentioned expire in 2023. The OP asked what happens after that: layoffs or moving people to other locations.

HP sold the Boise Site many years ago to the State of Idaho and very few folks are left there. I was WFRd back in 2017 and have heard nothing but more of the same since I left.

"SD has a lot of the PWP activities there. I don't think it is shutting down anytime soon."

So Apple bought the old HP campus for 445 million to let HP (a competitor) just stay there? HP has not announced leasing or buying any other building there to relocate those currently working at the old campus. Once Apple moves in this year, what will be HP's future?

SD has a lot of the PWP activities there. I don't think it is shutting down anytime soon. Boise and Vancouver are both smaller than SD. Singapore does not have PWP.

San Diego is there because of print activities, which you knew would be moved. As such, i think you already knew that the outcome of SD site, i.e. shut down. If the site is gone, I guess all HC in that location would be gone.
