I still can't believe that several very talented colleagues, from whom you could learn many things, were laid off.
Why? Where is this company actually going if it's getting rid of such people?
Surely they will not be easy to replace.

Saying the “most skilled” people were let go is a petty statement, and does a disservice to the colleagues who were not laid off. Be better.
