Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Sweat it out and hold it

When 3m is so cheap to invest in production amenities like ac or restrooms for employees. Got to save pennies on energy bill and let labor intensive production sweat it out till they have medical issues, feinting, or possible death from hitting concrete. Just takes 1 injury to negate that savings. Perhaps they're trying to make employees quit? Ethical award goes to?

Why are they still spending millions to sponsor 3M golf events?

Because some not that bright manager realized that if they skipped business cards they can save a whole $25 per person on a promotion. Remember, they can afford the 10% salary bump, but the extra $25 is really a bridge too far.

Let's see:

  • - 85,000 employees, maybe half have business cards at all. Call it 45,000 people.
  • Average promotion or new job every 5 years, call it (45,000 / 5) = 9000 new sets a year.
  • 9000 sets a year times $25/set is $225,000 per year.

Wow, that almost paid for Mike's last round the world tour. So if we get Mike to keep his travel down, we can give 9000 people part of the proper support they need to do their jobs. Alternatively, they can cut out a leadership conference once, and save enough to cover the bill for at least 5 years.

Employees anniversary luncheons and gifts have been cut too.

There used to be gifts for new horns or wreaths for death of family members to the employees. But all these have been taken away. Another cost cutting measure that doesn’t show any caring on employees

Some examples of recent cost cutting measures that have come to light:

  1. No plastic laminations for posters being presented during internal events.
  1. No new business cards for people changing job roles or getting promoted

Maybe Tireman read a book about sweatshops in 3rd world countries and thought it was worth a try. Next thing they'll be chaining all the doors shut so you can't escape.
