Thread regarding 3M layoffs

I want out, but the job market sucks right now

I have no faith in this company anymore. No trust for the leadership. No confidence that my job will exist in a year.

I want to leave.

But I'm not one of the ones that were laid off; I can't simply add the green "Looking for Work" circle to my LinkedIn, and I can't be obvious about my job search.

I've already had a couple interviews, and they straight-up asked me if I was looking because I was laid off.

I'm also running into salary issues -- it seems like now is a terrible time to be looking, because it seems like most jobs that are equivalent to mine tend to pay less, and I've only been in my role a short time, so it's unlikely that I can reach for that next step.

Ridiculous rationalization.

No excuses. Just leave.

It sounds like you have been in your role a short time and your compensation is currently better than what the rest of the market will offer. You are employed and well paid, which sounds like a good situation while you reflect on if you are in the right career field, how much of a pay cut you are willing to take, and what will make you happy. If you like what you do, I say research headhunters and try to get an idea of what the market is willing to pay for your skill and experience level and start there. Many who have been cut ended up landing in better situations, and didn't realize they were out there. Good luck to you!

Just a suggestion - get while the gettin's good, or at least within reason. Q4 is notoriously bad to be in the job market. Companies budgets are already spent and hiring doesn't ramp back up until Q1 of the next year. This time of year is in the golden hour, so to speak. Best of luck to you! To all of us!

If you think the job market is bad now, just wait 6-12 months. Imagine 1/20th the number of available jobs than now but for even less money. That's what happened in 2009. Plan accordingly.

With all of the cuts around you, chances are you are doing the work of 2+ people for one paycheck. 3M gets a bargain and you burn out. There is nothing wrong with taking a cut to get in the door somewhere stable, then proving yourself to earn increases. What good is better pay if you're too tired to enjoy it?

Don't talk salary at the beginning. Almost everyone will try to low-ball you, anyway. Sell yourself first. And a pay cut for a happier work environment isn't necessarily a bad thing. You can find another job in the future when there is less competition.
