I know at the store I work in is going to all or more self checkouts .... So why are they still hiring cashiers. Hiring just to lay people off ?????

People fought for $15 and now the machines are taking over as predicted.
The fight for $15 was pushed by the robotics industry. Go to MC D. There’s no cashier just a few touch screen kiosks and one drive thru cashier. But that’s going Artificial intelligence.
Now why would Lowe’s pay for cashiers when they can use that money to offset the shoplifters?
What is a code 75? Elderly person?
Payroll is the most controllable expense. Adios cashiers.
Lowes has the worst ergonomics of any self-checkouts I've seen. It seems the handling heights for hand baskets at the checkouts is far too low. The height of the basket shelf seems to be set so that a medium-sized dog can eat snacks from it comfortably. It is not setup for people to easily grasp and move items across the scanning deck. I wonder who wrote the specifications for these abominations?
It’s called automation. Same reason that you are seeing kiosks in fast food restaurants. It’s a way to lower labor costs and increase profits for the company.
We get complaints every week in the LTR surveys. Brings the scores down big time.
I'm in my mid-60's. We have a lot of older folks here who are, frankly, unable (also unwilling) to do SCO. Have had several in the past few weeks leave their carts in front of the registers and leave without buying anything.
I could assist, but our store decided 1 person can cover all 8 machines by themselves.
I just don't see all customers using self check out,
Lots of news stories today about shoplifting, self-checkout systems, and locked displays. Check DrudgeReport, and tree out from there.
Also need them for the dreaded code 75s
Got to have a few people monitoring them. Plus front service desk. OSLG, and commercial sales
