I want out. I also want to be paid to leave because I've earned it after years of mistreatment by this company. There is no guarantee that I'll find my name on the next layoff list, but I would like to at least improve my chances, if at all possible. Any managers here who could tell me what kind of behavior will work the best but will not give them grounds to fire me at the same time?

HR and senior management play very nasty tricks to avoid paying severance.
- Give you a partial achieved in the year end performance review.
- Following year mid year review, tracking to partial achieved again.
- Placed on a PIP.
- RIF'd without severance.
Confidence gone.
I resigned once they did step 1 to me. The best decision of my career.
I'm the lucky one to be laid off , not much of severance but my mental health is improving though
Ask yourself first how much you think they will pay for you to leave...for sure not much. Better take care of your mental health and leave/run as it will not get better if you think about leaving already is not a good sign. There is many many other opportunities outside, get your confidence back as I am sure TR took it away - management did or employees who do f-c...g zero and use you to do their job ;)
Procrastinate about returning to office.
HR departments have a big dirty-tricks playbook they use to manage people out without coughing up severance and without the risk of getting sued.
Forgive me for sounding cynical, but at the end of the day, you can't fight the Man and win; believe me, I've tried. Just abandon this sinking ship for the sake of your own health and sanity.

Managers unfortunately have little influence. Directors still have very minimal, most decisions are made above that.
Didn't they do that about 5 or 6 years ago? Voluntary separation?
Be prepared to be “managed out”. The company will not buy you out. You can raise your hand, but I’m not sure at what level a manager has to direct who gets let go or not. If your manager has no say or input then the discussion is pointless.
To me that’s the real question. How much do managers have in picking who gets laid off?
You could always go to your manager and respectfully offer to make his/her life easier by volunteering to be laid off and receive the same severance they are offering to others with your title and experience. I don't think they would have the grounds to fire you merely by volunteering to be laid off.
