Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Musings from someone who was laid off April 2020.

Musing here on a lazy Sunday morning and haven't been back to this board in awhile. I was laid off from Intel in a political hit piece around April 2020 right before covid. Was a G8. Joined another large tech company and never looked back.

I remember I was afraid to leave because of geographic reasons and thinking I wasn't "good enough" to get another job due to how Intel can actually atrophy your skills. I was better than I thought and landed on my feet quick. There are still good people who are stuck at Intel, but vast majority of the best engineers all the way up to Fellow I know have long left. Yet, it is cathartic to see this absolutely cesspool of a company get demolished by the likes of AMD, NVIDIA, Microsoft, Apple, etc. The politics, backstabbing, land grabbing, nepotism, lack of accountability, information hoarding, and incompetence are all NEXT LEVEL at Intel. Like, you will experience some of that at any other big tech company, but my lord did Intel take it to a higher plan.

Most of the people left at Intel I warrant are those that are just trying to make it to retirement and know they don't have the skills, or the will to learn anything new to start over at another company.

In most cases, the Architects and enablers of intel’s failures and their circle of friends have left intel to join other companies. I find it funny to hear all these great engineers, great people leaving intel… David B. a sr. Fellow no less joined amd, Lynn joined amd as a Corp vp., Dan who was fired from intel joined amd, some of the finance vps (the worst examples of a-s kissing, hiding information) left intel to become CFOs at great companies, Randhir got a job, raja started a company - I mean need I say more.

short summary

  1. grade eight gets laid off claiming it was a 'political hit piece'. No evidence of that.
  2. Op filled with self doubt and worried that he/she/x "wasn't good enough".
  3. Needs to find a way to reconcile their feelings and need of self worth.
  4. gets a new job and convinces themselves that, 'see I am good after all' and it was that evil Intel that is flawed and falling apart.

Forgive me for this reasoned analysis, but whoever wrote this is not an unbiased source when it comes to evaluating the company. More like a emotionally unstable low level (grade 8) worker bee.

@vqm, happened to me too. If you're not consistently striving to move up they move you out. Then they turn around and replace you with lower cost less qualified folks.

It's the Intel way.

I was at career saturation. G8 for 8 years. Successful every year. Pressure then put on me because I have not moved up to G9. On the chopping block ☹️

If you left and didn't look back, why you are wasting your time here? We don't miss you either

OP here. lol at some of the comments calling out bitterness. Why of course! Who wouldn't be? I got "Exceeds" on my last focal, and also was getting out-of-cycle raises. Small now in hindsight, and select others I know were getting them, but the gesture was appreciated.

And my FLM (then became SLM shortly) was excellent. The best boss I've ever had. Technically sharp, cared about his employees, and gave it to you straight. You know what happened to him? He also got politically hit for telling the truth and left engineering. A lot of the good people in the org (SDG at the time) did in that round.

Intel put too many people on the same thing resulting in in fighting and busy work. By the time you worked out a position, you are already unfit for other companies. Staying was justifiable when money and stocks were good. But not now.

I just wonder about some of the employees who were recently hired when Intel was actually paying somewhat decent for new hires. I think back in late 2021? Those RSUs must all be so underwater lmao.

For sure,
@Op musings are classic example of illusory superiority bias.

You say you were laid off? How were you reviews? Any 'outstandings' or 'exceeds expectations'?

It is human nature to find a way to comfort yourself when you are laid off. I mean think about it... everyone who is laid off argues they are one of the 'good ones' and nobody ever admits they are below average.

everyone in the core parts of Intel think the company cannot succeed without them. Common ego problem in "one Intel". Intel made bad decision years ago and chickens have come home to roost. Almost as simple as that.

Regarding stock, what's even funnier in my circle for trading is when referring to other industries absolute sh---y tickers, we call it "the Intel of XYZ". Like "Wells Fargo is the Intel of banks" hahahaha

OP. Feel better? No? Get help by a psychiatrist. It is okay to go through the process. People like you believe corporations owe you nothing. You own your own career as Intel said. Own it and move on.

How can anyone even defend Intel at this point? I literally don't get it. The proof has been there for years.

Can't execute.

Stock price smashed to smithereens.

Has cut back on employee benefits including 401k and reduced salaries.

Abysmal work culture and politics.

Any skills gained are usually Intel specific and hard to apply elsewhere limiting mobility.

Aging workforce entrenched while younger generations hop in and right back out. Only the d-mb ones remain.
