Why do employees think Executive management will address their concerns and keep employee friendly policies in place? Employees are given only as much as management thinks is necessary to achieve business goals, no more, no less. WFH was a concession given at a time when employee retention was a concern. Companies have the upper hand now, so expect fewer incentives to stay. No semiconductor company can operate with WFH. Test teams still worked onsite during the pandemic. Why should they be the only ones to come to the office? It is called work for a reason. If you don’t like company policies, then you can leave. That has always been your only option. Institutional investors are the real owners and they expect the board and the C suite to maximize their returns. Employees are just a tool to produce profits for shareholders.

CA is nostalgic about the good old days, but fails to accept the fact that the world has changed in 30 years and fails to admit that executive management made it impossible by moving half the jobs to India. Most collaboration occurs during evening hours on Teams, thanks to mandatory outsourcing.

I'm with you on the BS.

I posted a serious question on Slido (no ego stroke like they picked ones were). I asked asked about the planning that went into the RTO dictat... I sat, and watched, and waited and surely soon it would be reviewed? Sadly not... 'awaiting review' from before and throughout, right to the end of the event.

It seems Slido are sponsoring corporate censorship? - remind me to not send them a Christmas card.

I thought Q valued their staff above everything else? That's why I joined. And what about the public promises Amon made in 2121? Did he forget about that?

It was clear from the slides that CA is seeing $$$ from the AI bubble and fancies a piece of it, that combined with the fact that (for a while at least) Snapdragon 8g2 is a leading device. All credit to the Qualcomm teams behind if you are one of them.

Not so sure about betting the entire farm on a highly competitive costly and fast moving software bubble. Software has a very fast lifecycle compared to hardware. I can't see people binning a high end phone just because some toy app to make silly videos won't work on it. When the hype dies down people will reflect once again on how this always happens.

I also wonder what you think about the sudden threatening messages? Notices of jobs "at risk" and taking control of teams away from managers through 'restructuring' and implanting fear of reprisals if you are not in the office.

Amon has based that on a made up story, that somehow everybody has an intern under their wing. Arguing that they are suffering because everybody that knows anything is shirking off at the mall. Is that honestly the case? I'd love to see the evidence and data backing up that claim.

Our management know exactly what we do, how we do it and when we need to be in the office. If there are people taking the pi-s (though I've not seen evidence). Then give management the power bring them to account - bringing back HR would be a good start.

Amon should remain detached from the coal face. He is acting as a dictator not a CEO and should concentrate on direction not implementation. It looks like he visited the management school of Elon Musk by meddling with the day-to-day instead of the big picture.

Back to my 'stuck' question for Amon....

I asked of the effect on the company's morale, employee well being and their mental health due to the sudden change in policy. It comes from the way that this change has affected myself, and I had asked if there were evidence of others finding it difficult? I worry that there are...

So I am sending this so, if you want to pass on your story in confidence, you are you can find me on Matrix, (details at the end)... I am going to anonymize, collate some stories and thoughts and get that into The Register to see if we can give Amon some feedback from the real employees, this time uncensored.

I see it that many of us have completely changed our lives for the better to make work a pleasure, rather than something we do to pay the bills.

It is easy for me, I just have a boyfriend and we have no children or elderly parents. I am sure there will be employees who expected to be at home when the children finish school or off sick, have made arrangements round their families work life or that need to care for others, inter-working their job with looking after an elderly or infirm friend or relative.

Amon, with zero negotiation, thought or planning, expects over 40000 people to drop all that and expect employees to rewind our lives and go back to the old ways before 2020.

My own experience is that the pressure of suddenly being required in the office, the extra planning and organization that takes. The continuous interruptions in the office and need to fit my quality of life round work rather than the other way round has seriously affected me mentally. I am very close to being forced to take time off sick with stress and that is after only a few weeks. In fact the only reason I am hanging on is that being off sick would just put pressure on my colleagues.

I've love to get some real data on this. I would not be surprised there are more lost hours in May due to 'sickness' than any month in the last two years. (So anonymized leaks welcome)

Remember, one of Amons' first acts was to 're-structure' HR to 'make it more efficient'... by moving it online... Ok, first step done. That got rid of any means for the staff to have a voice, now to work.....

Here are some notes I took from the AHM:

  • - Announced a new Corporate tag line "Engineering Human Progress" - er by going backwards - what irony. I wonder how many S23's were sold on the need for better home communications.
  • - Cited the mandated RTO as from his "experience as a young engineer" - yes - 30 years ago before the Internet existed. Perhaps I missed that week but where was the consultation?
  • - Made a 'not so veiled' threat that if people complained about it he could make it 5 days instead of 4. Oh I got him all wrong. He's so generous..
  • - Had the cheek to say "We are a flexible company - we don't mind changing things" and then when answering another only minutes later (that somehow got past the censor) and mentioned the RTO dicta, his response was "(laughing) Nice try, not up for discussion..." to noticeably nervous laughter from the audience. And the question vanished. Fairly sure that was staged, a deliberate ploy to provide a reason to say what he thinks, another threat. That event me think of the audience watching Trump on CNN, laughing at his admission of ra-e - yikes!

Lastly I found it funny that in the same meeting he announced increasing the power, size and influence of Software Engineering within Q and work with open APIs, yay progress!

Though all i can say is good luck Mr Amon! I am sure you will find hundreds of experienced software engineers, especially within AI and IoT, who will sign up for RTO when every single software engineer I know is WFH full time and their companies have got rid of most of their office space.

MATRIX:
Matrix is like IRC (if you remember that)
Just pick a 'home server' and select a 'client' app, then ask to join a room.

It is up to you if you want to use a real identity or not.

You don't need an email address and it probably even works over TOR if you are really paranoid.

There are many 'clients' to choose from:
I recommend Element for browser based, though there are others. *

  • - https://element.io
  • - https://element.catgirl.cloud
  • - https://codeberg.org/yarmo/delightful-matrix#clients (others)
  • Not all clients support all features. I believe Element is the most complete.

Installable or portable app versions of Element + others are here:

  • - https://matrix.org/clients

You don't have to, though I recommend using catgirl.cloud as your 'homeserver' as that will mean I know you probably came from this message.
https://registration.matrix.catgirl.cloud/ (registration here)

List of homeservers:
https://joinmatrix.org/servers/

There are also client applications for many device types
https://matrix.org/clients

The open (non encrypted) matrix room is
# Cup cake 0523 - 1 : catgirl . cloud
(remove all the spaces - They were inserted to confuse bots)

If you want to talk in private leave a message in the open room
There are other non-advertised encrypted rooms as well as 1:1s

I will ask people who want to join the closed rooms a trivial question in order provide some evidence they are really associated with Qualcomm.

We are already too late for the AI party...we missed it and there is no way we can recover this loss. It was sibering to see CA hoping for NVDA leave some crumbles on the table for us to eat. A 4 years old chip? That all slide was surreal on par with that other slide from microsoft....we need an OCTANE that as firs action fires 90% of the HR department with zero severance package. Once I see a CEO that tells to the HR to effing zip it and go to the back of the line, then I will believe this boat can be steered in the right direction. Till then have the HR designing chips

Clearly the best solution is to move all operations to Bengaluru and leave a sales office open in San Diego, Bay Area and maybe Austin.

All we do is chasing new tech waves an we are generally late; look at Cloud, look at Metaverse and now AI. Let's cry in the bathroom like someone joked about it ;). On that path, recent M&As, most of them, increased significantly ca/opex and didn't bring much to the table.
