Thread regarding 3M layoffs

For those "laid off" - most absurd comment from HR/Boss?

Some I've heard already:

3M is going through a "historic transformation", sadly I regret to inform you that it doesn't include your position (told to LVS/MTE)

TRUST ME, we've worked closely together for years but this isn't personal. But someone had to go to meet the quotas. (3M center folks)

You've been a great employee for us (and then silence after the bad news). (small production sites)

When Mike said "we" needed to reduce rooftop space, that meant reduce people under the roofs (told to a WFH person)

I know you are shocked, but if you had the same information I had, you'd make the same "difficult" decision that I did (more than one time this one was used)

As "difficult" as this decision is to me personally (yeah, right!), people shouldn't be surprised since we are even putting Wonewok up for sale!

feel free to share more goodies.

Tireman, drink up Scotch #6!

I haven’t gotten the severance check yet based upon years of service and also vacation payout. Does anyone know how this final check will be taxed?

US based manager wimped out and HR did it alone. He was too busy resigning and his boss is an M so doesn’t give two sh1ts

This one was an oldie but goodie offered up early during Mikey's Reign of Error.

You're too good of an employee and worker to be unemployed and collect at 3Ms behalf. Save the company and yourself by accepting a decent job right away so you don't hurt 3M and your GESPP.

Unbelieveable!

The sad part is that there are numbers of people who would leave if giving the severance and were willing to give the next person a chance to succeed.
The way things are done makes no common sense. Why would you let a talented person go.
I am a T4 at the age of retirement and had a lot of young talent around me that needed a job worst than I did but was kept while they were released.

It wasn't absurd but sincere when my boss told me that it wasn't personal, that it had nothing to do with performance or position need, but that it was a business decision made by "someone who's playing the role of leader even though she doesn't know how to lead." I'll never forget that.

The most laughable performance I ever witnessed was in the early '00s. Brad S-uer was running ECB in Austin and they'd just announced the first round of the McNerney "rank and yank ala GE" 10% cutbacks. There was a large communication event in the cafeteria where ol' Brad stood there, worked up some crocodile tears while talking about how mass layoffs are the most difficult thing ever and no leader ever wants to be part of them. To add some extra flair he relayed how his school-aged daughter came to him and asked "daddy, did you just fire all of those people" as if that's the type of conversation middle school-aged kids would talk about. But it had the desired effect on a few audience members who let out some sympathetic "awwws." I mean, the elimination victims just think they're the ones having a bad day. Imagine having to tell your teenage daughter from the comfort of your west Austin mansion that you were indeed the hatchet man.

"You're skills don't match 3M's future." After 31 years and the most tenure in the group and a two month old intern, it was my skills that were no longer matching. If that was truly the case, why did the intern not have to take over any of my projects - because they didn't have the skills to take them, but yet mine didn't match.

It sucked at the time, but it helped knowing there were 19,999 who also got the same message last year.

It also helps being somewhere else where you are not thrown to the wolves on day one, trained in, guided and your C-suite folks serve you breakfast before a town hall that actually means something and not just a word salad. Top priority is the people, from top to bottom.

There is life outside 3M. And it is good. If you are still there - get out now.

To be honest - wtf is the firing manager gonna say that doesn’t sound ridiculous ? Esp with HR on the phone along with you, watching everything that’s said. Just read the script and get it done - no need to be disingenuous.

I was told, “the good news is you’re eligible for rehire in 6 mos.” Like I’m ever coming back to this company again.

It's a "business" decision with no additional info to explain it.

Mike is making this difficult decision to "position 3M for an exciting future" (sadly, you aint part of it!)
