Beware: false unemployment claims filed with employee social security numbers

In many states, if a signed release is a requirement to receive severance, you may receive unemployment funds in addition to a severance package.

I just called the state (MA) unemployment office about filing a claim and was told that a claim had been filed in April using my name and social security number. I had to file a fraud report before I can move forward with a new claim. I was told that fraud is rampant and that this may not be related to the recent ransomware event.

Be sure you file to receive the Experian credit monitoring coverage paid by CommScope. I believe you can claim the Experian monitoring coverage through August. If you don't have the notification sent to your work email, contact CommScope and have the information forwarded to you.

Good luck everyone!

Also watch your medical records because you used to not be able to have info from identity theft removed.

Equifax is the one with the data breach. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPjgRKW_Jmk

This happened to me as well. Remember that Experian has been the subject of massive data breaches, so good luck relying on them for anything. You can monitor your own credit reports.

In response to a posted question: Yes, I was still employed in April and only recently laid off.

I'm not sure if it's worth calling. The unemployment office sends a notification to the address listed in the claim. If the filer knows a lot of your personal info (and isn't also checking your mail), you'll see the notification and can call then. In my case, there was insufficient correct information in the filing and it was denied early on. Frankly, it shocked me. The very helpful people at MA unemployment that I talked to said this happens all the time. The timing seemed suspicious since it coincided with the ransomware event.

Is it worth checking even if you weren't laid off in that case? Were you still employed in April?
