Engineers Keep It Going

As an engineer, I may be biased, but we seem to be the only group capable of running this place. I’m happy to see more and more engineers taking management positions since the most successful/profitable groups are run by us. My only issue is that are pay seems below the competition and we loose good people. Why not pay more and keep the good ones around? Other people seeing this too?

Short cuts always taken by engineers! They don’t listen to Field workers because the budget has to be made. Also they rush things trying to get there bonuses higher from a good job done fast. Not a proper job that keeps the public safe!

Salaried engineers are not Union mostly and therefore make less than Union workers. How wise is that?

Well, friends, not to be critical here but I am taken aback by this running negative commentary and name calling. Granted I am on the outside looking in: I am not now, nor have I ever been, a Marathon employee. For decades I worked for a supplier that provided engineered products to oil refineries, chemical plants and EPC firms. I have worked with process and projects engineers, operations and maintenance personnel, purchasing agents, senior managers, etc. at plant sites big and small including multiple major Marathon refineries. Having observed all of my customers up close and personal for 35-plus years, I deem Marathon to be a responsible and well-run company that employees highly capable people and treats those people rather well. Is Marathon perfect? No, but neither is any other employer - and I will candidly tell you there are many places that are a big step down from Marathon. I have watched engineers and others jump ship only to find the grass was really nice and green, relatively speaking, at Garyville, Galveston Bay, Ashland, Robinson and other locations. I realize it's hard sometimes to appreciate what I am saying here, particularly when you are in thick of handling what seem to be intractable problems and you don't feel appreciated, but I suggest looking at the bigger picture and counting your blessings. Just my opinion, for what it's worth. All the best to all of you at work and home.

LOL. If one was a good engineer, why would one choose to work at MPC? At my site, we contract out any major project. MPC engineers just watch the competent contractors do the work!

“Engineers make it happen”, that is a giant misconception at Marathon perpetuated by under achieving engineers. If you were to document the poorly lead projects that typically go over budget and resemble the underside of a used trash can lid in the Georgia summer heat when completed, then you might see what the rest of us have observed from the leaders of Marathon men. Short cuts are taken when it comes to quality, craftsmanship and documentation. Lies, reluctance to place any subordinate direction in black and white because it could be traced back to you, and that ability to pout like a cranky four year old are your super powers. All to achieve a budget that was set by individuals with the communications skill set of a sea cucumber. The terms effective leadership and communication must be lobotomized when being christened with the golden P.E. Contractors and the hourly employees with some assistance from Pipeline/Terminal/ Refinery management usually slow the path of destruction created by the overly confident id--ts on parade. If Marathons engineers were to visit “real world” lines of business, you might have a greater appreciation for true engineers (practitioners and masters of their craft). Unfortunately when an engineer’s ego is bolstered by individuals equally as inept, Marathon engineering is what you see. There are a few good engineers within Marathon, God speed to them on their escape from the clown circus.

Most all engineers at MPC could not find their way out of a paper bag, even if one end was open. Very few have a PE. None could get the same pay outside of MPC. If MPC wants to cut costs, the entire engineering staff could be outsourced and maybe eliminate the type of disaster that just occurred at GBR.

I am an engineer. The kind of attitude you display is the exact reason a significant portion of the company dislike engineers. You seem immature, that will change, unfortunately your spelling and grammar probably will not.....it is a genetic trait of engineers.
