Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Job Struggles

Has anyone had any trouble applying for other jobs? I keep getting rejected.

Why would someone from the outside apply at VMware in these days?

I was the original poster. Many applicants and we hired four people in the last 9 months. In the greater industry, things in VMware are not bad. Objectively not bad. It is still a good company with good pay and a good culture that does unique work that people strive for. There are opportunities here you cannot get elsewhere, hence our reqs with so many applicants. Of those 2,000, about 20 were internal. None of those were qualified.

Many like to doom and gloom it here, but realistically that's a very vocal and annoying minority. Everyone else is just keeping their head down, focusing on the good things, and doing fun work.

We are hiring for a req in SBU. Typically we get about 150-200 applicants. Last month we got 2,000. The market is flooded with people looking for work.

Maybe 1800-1850 are internal applicants keeping applications from the outside the same? :P

  • Why would someone from the outside apply at VMware in these days? There is no sane reason.
  • Why would someone internal apply for a VMware position? Maybe because they think a new req is save?

I started looking as soon as the acquisition was announced. Still took me 3 months and at least 200 applications. It can be discouraging. Just take it one day at a time. Reach out to people you know. A lot of people have recently gotten laid off so there is competition. Anyway, just keep on applying. Its a lot like dating.

I went external and was able to get in. I had applied to a bunch of places and only got two interviews one wasn't even a job I applied too.

Referral helped a ton for the one I got into but it only got me in the door I had fantastic feedback on my interview skills.

Most of the other LinkedIn stuff I got was the usual sysadmin type roles or contract to hire. It appears the market is flooded with the higher end comp role candidates, while it looks like most of the positions actually hiring are less senior

Referrals are key. No point applying. You need to know people. If you are like me who's burned his bridges all his life, then you are on your own :D

If external, the job market is flooded with tech workers right now.. so you are likely competing against very skilled individuals.

Will get worse after the layoffs start.

All you can do is keep trying. Use each interview you get to better sharpen the tools in your box (speaking, lingo, confidence, etc) and eventually something will pan out.

I interview internal and external at least twice a year, mostly for self improvement. I’ve turned down more jobs than I can count in the past few years. But each discussion I have makes me that much stronger.

Have faith, don’t get discouraged and begin yourself. When the right op comes along, it will work out.

Internal, or external?

If internal, you aren’t the right fit, or you need to hone your interviewing skills.
